This is part of a course in research technique which is offered by the College of Physical Education and Athletics. New Athletic Skill PhysEd Conquers Backward Writing The assignment was to practice writing upside down and backwards every day for five days. This is not a new type penmanship course. It is more on the order of one of the less ac tion. It is a course in research graduate students in the College of Physical Education and Atti-1 This semester they performed a motor-learning experiment, made a survey and investigated other research problems to become more familiar with the methods and techniques of research. What connection does writing upside down and backwards have to do with research? The students were atempting over a short period of time, to mas ter a motor skill previously un familiar to them. Since the teaching of motor skills is one of the important parts of any physical education pro gram, they wanted to gain a bet ter understanding of how people learn these skills. One student, unacquainted with the touch system of typing, tried to see how much she could learn in five days. After a total of less than I'/e hours of practice, divided over 10-minute periods, she was able to type 28 words a minute, mistakes included. Some people who couldn't By LOIS DONTZIG ive courses in physical educa technique which is offered to juggle undertook that feat. One of the jugglers made much greater progress than another who had practiced the same amount of time. Everything done in this course is related to physical education. A typical problem of interest to all was— should entering fresh men be given a pre-classification test in physical education. Joan Nessler, graduate student in physical education from Ce darhurst, N.Y., gave 30 freshman woman volunteers a classification —a shuttle run, a vertical jump and pull up. Each of these mea test consisting in a 3-item battery sured a different aspect of phys ical fitness. The investigation will be car ried out in three main phases. The first will consist Jf research to determine rushing policies at other schools and that of the Na tional Panhellenic Council. Com putation of these findings will fol low, with the council's recom mendations to senior panhel con cluding the study. Although a new pledge class will be sitting on the council by late February, the present group plans to continue its investiga tion for as long as the results may take to compile. "This group, having rushed in formally is particularly qualified to undertake such a study," Bar bara Strauss, junior in liberal arts from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and senior • panhel advisor to the group, said. In other business the council discussed plans for a tea to wel come the next Junior Panhellenic Council into office. It was decided that some sort of a briefing ses sion would be necessary, but no definite plans were made. A motion was made to intro duce formal parliamentary pro cedure to the previously informal meetings and was passed unani mously.
