Hugo Weisgall, di - tinguished
visiting professor of usie, - will
speak on "Tradition a d Revolu
tion" 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Hetz
el Union assembly rolm.
The lecture will be I the second
in a series of four on "20th Cen
tury Opera."
In his first lecture Weisgall
described how the early 20th cen
tury opera composers failed to
live up to the tradition which had
been set by Richard Wagner and
Guiseppi Verdi in the 19th cen
tury.
Friday, Weisgall will tell how
opera composers revolted against
the 19th century tradition and be
gan writing in a new style.
Weisgall speaks on the develop
ment of opera from the viewpoint
of a composer. He has written
operas, music for ballets, voice
aid orchestra and is also a con
ductor.
While teaching aclass at the
University, he also commutes to
New York two days every week
to teach at the Julliard School of
Music.
Former Ag Prof Dies;
Taught Here 38 Years
Dr. Frederick G. Merkle, 68, who
retired in 1957 as professor emer
itus of soil technology, died early
yesterday at the Centre County
Hospital.
He served 38 years on the Uni
versity faculty and earlier taught
at the University of Massachu
settes where .he had received his
bachelor of science and master of
science degrees. His doctorate was
conferred by Cornell University.
Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Presby
terian Church, State College, with
burial in the Centre County Mem
orial Park.

demic affairs, was a panel
discussant on the topic, `'lnter
national Relations and Higher'
Education" and also served as a
discussion group chairman at the
Student Conference on National
Affairs held recently at Texas
A. and M. University.

Army Promotes Grigsby
The Department of the Army
has announced the promotion to
cantain of James D. Grigsby, as

Hsistant professor of military sci

Grigsby entered the service in
1953 and has been at the Univer
