The fellowships are given upon election to the Society of Fel lows of the National Council on Religion in Higher Education. The selection of new fellov.'s is determined by intellectual abil ity and scholarly promise; a per sonal religious conviction; inter est in a relation between religion and higher education; concern for the relevance of religion and edu cation to the problems of modern life; and open-mindedness and an ability to work with people. The stipend given to a Fellow depends upon individual circum stances but usuallyy ranges per academic year up to $lBOO for married students and $l2OO for single students. Applicants may be from any field of study in the arts and sci ences in which the Doctor of Philosophy degree or its equiv alent is given. The committee acted upon a assed by the Student Government Associ- Mordecal Treblow, graduate student in chemistry from Phila delphia, said, “This is the first time, to the best of my knowledge, that a college chess team in the United States has achieved var sity status.” Trebiow is also a di rector of the U.S. Chess Feder ation. Dr. Orrin Frink, professor of mathematics, will coach the team, while William F. Fuller, manager of Associated Student Activities, will serve as man ager. Chess Club members William Bickham, senior in engineering science from Philadelphia; An-j thony Cantrone, junior in aero nautical engineering from Phila delphia; Gerald Eckman, senior in physics from Millersville; Fred jerick Shaffer, senior in physics ,from Somerset; and Richard Somerville, sophomore in meteo rology from Alexandria, W.Va., have participated in a majority ;of this semester’s matches. | Eugene Grumer, junior in fuel ! technology from Pittsburgh and .Harry Mathews, junior in elec trical engineering from Ligonier, will act as team alternates. PENNSYLVANIA TIM to Plan More Gambling Because of the success of Satur-j day’s Las Vegas Night, the Town Independent Men's Council is planning to hold another gamb ling night in the spring. Philip Haines, TIM president, reported that 603 tickets w r ere sold and 100 complimentary tickets given out. “We turned 300 away ! at the door,” he said. Haines said the spring event would be larger, and that he hoped it would accommodate 1000 persons. The event earned TIM and the co-sponsor, Leonides Council, $687.
