(Editor's Note: Following is an
account of the first football
game played at the present
Beaver Field in 1909)
By exactly the same score
with which Captain McCleary's
eleven "took over" Grove City
College last fall, Captain Vor
his' team won from the Western
Pennsylvanians last Saturday in
the first game of football play
ed on the new Beaver Field
gridiron. It was a contest simi
lar to last year's in many r . e •
spects; we got the same num
ber of touchdowns in both
games and the visitors played
the same kind of plucky foot
ball.
The announcement by Coach
Hollenback of the lineup which
started the Grove City game
was received with much satis
faction and the White and Blue
played a fast, but by no means
flawless, game throughout. Her
mann, McCleary, Hirshman and
Captain Vorhis composed a
backfield which has fought
valiantly for the White and
Blue in ' at least half a dozen
battles a n d this combination
was up to its old tricks of help
ful aggressiveness and sturdy
defense.
The first half ended 22 to 0,
Different Lucas
Involved in Crash
Richard Lucas was involved in
an automobile collision with
Henry Rudy of Port Matilda.
However. this is not the Lucas
of football fame.
Lucas, sophomore in electrical
engineering, was driving south on
N. Atherton St. when he attempt
ed to make a left turn into Hill
crest Drive. His auto collided with
Rudy's.
Damage was estimated at $6O
with Lucas' car taking the brunt
of the crash.

but we could score only one
touchdown by McCleary and
one field goal by Larry Vorhis
the second period. Numerous
substitutions were made after
the second half had started and
a number of new men showed
up well. Very, the Mercersburg
end, who commenced the con
test, made a decidely favorable
impression; he was the only
player in the lineup who had
not seen more or less service on
the varsity previous to this
year.
Vorhis scored the first touch
down of the year after six min
utes of play, through a rush off
tackle; this score was also the
first on the new Beaver Field.
Captain Marks of Grove City
made some good gains on long
runs and his players fought
with a stubbornness that was
good to see. Left halfback Mc-
Phail was unfortunate enough
to have his ankle broken to-
ward the end of the game.
The victory hardly showed
the strength that lies in our
present eleven but we will be
looking for all of that in the
Indian struggle at Wilkesbarre
next week.

The majority of accidents oc

according to the traffic com

day is the worst day.
Students who drive through
town around 8 a.m., 12 noon to
1 p.m. and 4 . 30 to 5 p.m. Monday
i through Friday should take spe
cial care to look both ways at
such blind corners as Beaver Ave.
and Burrowes St., according to
Intorre.
He suggested that during those
hours _students turn right at Col
lege Ave. and Culver Alley in
stead of Burrowes St. and Bea
ver Ave. Driving down the alley
behind the Borough Building is
safer because the alley is sel
dom used and drivers can see to
turn there better than at Bur
rowes and Beaver, he said.
He warned that the inter
section of S. Atherton Si. and
W. Beaver Ave. is the most
accident-prone in the Borough.
There have been 15 accidents
there between 1956 and 1959.
The traffic commission is cur
rently looking into this problem
and will report Thursday on ex
periments they have conducted
to improve congestion in that
vicinity.

According to records of the
State College police department,
the majority of accidents in the
Borough are caused by drivers
in the 24 to 34 age group. This
is a divergence from the na.

Intorre explained that many
