The weatherman calls for an extremely cold day with temperatures in the 30's, but no rain is expected for the Eastern grid championship battle. Both Rip Engle of Penn State and Ben Schwartzwal der of Syracuse will field veteran teams which rank sev enth and third in the nation respectively. Penn State has recorded wins over Missouri, V.M.1., Colgate, Army, Boston U, Illinois, and West Virginia. The Orange have breezed past the likes of Kansas, Maryland, Navy, Holy Cross, West Virginia, and Pitts burgh. In addition to ranking number three in the country, Schwartzwalder's grid monster tops the nation in total Of fense and defense. The Orange Bowl committee has informed Syracuse officials that the Orangemen would probably be invited to the Miami extravaganza should they win -today. The Orange and Penn State also are in the running for the Cotton, Gator and Liberty Bowls. "Syracuse has a great team. There's no use saying we don't know it," said Engle, "but we aren't scared and we aren't awed. "I think we can win, but it's going to take a tremen dous effort by everyone on the team to accomplish this." Schwartzwalder had similar feelings. "This, is our toughest game this year. It might even be the toughest since I came to Syracuse 11 years ago," he said while watching his team go through,a workout on soggy Beaver Field. An all-night rain Thursday plus some heavy showers made the field a little sloppy yesterday, but the ground crew had the tarp over the field last night and the playing area is expected to be in good shape. Both teams come into this afternoon's crucial game In fairly good physical condition.. Penn State's only question ;'*''''?, 10 , Pat Botula ... Lion captain _By SANDY PADWE Collegian Sports.
