TUESDAY, OCTOBE Presidents' Views AIM-Leonides Merger Considered Desirable One of the main reasons behind the proposed Association of Independent Men- Leonides merger was "poor communication" between the two groups, Harald Sandsthom, AIM president, said. AIM and Leonides have many joint activities End because they are two separate groups "many intermediate steps slow up the process of planning these activities," Sandstrom said. He said so many of the functions of AIM and Leonides are similar, that merging the two groups would be much more efficient. Last year's Indie Encampment recommenda tion that a joint planning commission be or. ganized to coordinate activities was carried out. Representatives of both AIM and Leonides formed a committee to plan joint activities and reported back to their respective organizations. But, according to Sandstrom, the joint plan ning commission "id not function as well as AIM and Leonides methbers hoped it would." He said there , was some disagreement about the commission's authority. The commission was not certain whether or not it should originate end plan , activities end then administer them independently, Sandstrom said that it took too much time for representatives to report back to the parent organization for approval. Sometimes the com mission went ahead without approval, he added. A workshop was set up at this year's Indie Encampment to work out some of the difficulties of the joint planning commission. The merger proposal originated in that workshop. Sandstrom said the merger had been dis cussed before but never "seriously." On the actual structure of the combined groups, Sandstrom haid, "I don't think it would be feasible to take both organizations as they now exist and simply put them together. The group would be too unwieldy." The elections system and the representation (proportion of men to women) system would have to be reorganized, Sandstrom said. AIM and Leonides have not drawn up any plans for their proposed organization. They will not draw up their constitution and then decide on the merger but will officially decide on the merger first, Sandstrom said. The committee working on the constitution will then have more incentive and not wonder whether or not what they are working on will be approved or rejected completely, he said. PENNSYLVANIA Leonides Council last night approved by a 17-6 vote the merging of Leonides with the Association of Independent Men into one independent organization. The council further decided to establish a joint committee of five Leonides and five AIM members to carry through a merger plan. Both motions were made by Dorothy Tynan, senior in psychology from Glenolden. The ap proval of the merger came only after an involved discussion of the merits of the proposal and some confusion as to parlimentary procedure concerning secondary suggestions from the floor. Carol Frank, Leonides president, was absent from the meeting due to illness, later gave her views on the proposal. Miss Frank said she was in favor of the move, but the idea "needs a lot of study." According to Miss Frank, the proposal came out of an Indie Encampment Workshop which had originally planned to discuss the Joint Planning Commis sion, at present the only permanent joint group of Leonides and AIM. Since the two groups do so many things to gether, a merger would make things more con venient, said Miss Frank. Also she added the increasing incidence of "community living" is making it very difficult to segregate the two groups. However, she said, it will be necssary to provide some group just for the women, since some projects such as the housemother's tea, the Mother's Day Breakfast and Mardi Gras are strictly girls' projects. The ideal setup she said, would be a joint body which would contain two separate sub groups, one for the men and one for the women. Miss Frank emphasized that she approved the plan for merger but had personal doubts about the way it is being handled. Her plan had been to establish a committee to merely study the proposal, its merits, necessity, etc. before approving the idea of the merger. This idea was also brought up from the floor at the meeting by Anne Farley, sophomore in edu cation from Cedars. However, Miss Farley's mo tions to table the motion or to establish a com mittee to study the plan were not acted upon. As set-up by the Council, implementation of the merger will be establised by the committee. A constitution will be submitted and voted upon by both Leonides and AIM. If the constitution is approved the question will be put to all the independent students for a vote. cif di ii -411 41,_ ON ............ STUDYING CAN BE SCREAMS If studying is bugging you, try mnemonics Mnemonics, as we all know, was invented by the great Greek philosopher Mnemou in 526 B.C. (Mnemonics, incidentally, was only one of the inventions of this fertile Athenian. He also invented the staircase which, as you may imagine, was of inestimable value to mankind. Before the staircase people who wished to go from floor to floor were forced to live out their lives, willy-nilly, on the ground floor, and ninny of them grew cross as bears. Especially Demosthenes who was elected Consul of Athens three times but never served because he was unable to get up to the office of Commissioner of Oaths on the third floor to he sworn in. But after Mnemon's staircase, Demosthenes got up to the third floor easy as pie—to Athens' soriow, as it turned out. Demosthenes, his temper shortened by years of confinement to the ground floor, soon embroiled his countrymen in a seiies of senseless wars with the Persians, the Visigoths and the Ogallala Sioux. He was voted out of office in 517 B.C. and Mnemon, who had made his accession possible, was pelted to death with fruit salad in the Duomo. This later became known as the Missouri Compromise.) But I digres.q. We were discuEsing mnemonics, which are nothing more than aids to memory —catcliwords or jingles that help you remember names, dates and places. For example: See bow simple? Make up your own jingles. What, for in stance, is the importaTit event immediately follouing Colum bus's discovery of America? The Boston Tea Party, of course. Try this: (NOTE: The Zuyder Zee was located in Boston Harbor until 1904 when Salmon P. Chase traded it to Holland for Louisiana and two outfielders.) But I digress. To get back to mnemonics, you can see how simple and useful they are—not only for history but also for everyday living; for instance: "Why Alpine?" you ask. Taste that fine, fresh flavor. Enjoy that subtle coolness. Until Alpine you needed two cigarettes to reap the benefits of Alpine—one for flavor, one for high filtra tion—:and smoking two cigarettes is never graceful; in fact, with mittens it is nigh impassible. Now you need only one cigarette—Alpine. Get home. You'll asee. The sponsors of this column make dipine, Philip Morris and Marlboro Cigarettes. Pick what goo please.
