COTTON CANDY was a big favorite with the younger set at the
4th of July carnival in downtown State College. Bingo was almost
as popular with the oldsters.
Swamps To
Be Studied
In Florida
Deep in the swamps of the
Florida Everglades, a team of Uni
versity scientists will seek new
knowledge of the nature of or
ganic materials found in the
earth's crust.
Dr. William Spackman, associ
ate professor of paleobotany
who is in charge of coal research,
will lead his third expedition to
the Florida swamplands this sum
mer.
With him will be C. Philip Dol
sen, University petrologist, and
Mrs. Dolsen, a research assistant
in geology. The party will explore
the Everglades in boats and light
aircraft. Two houseboats will
serve as field laboratories.
The expedition is part of a re
search project sponsored by the
U.S. Atomic Energy Commission
on "Mineralogy, Petrography and
Pa]eobotany of Uranium Bearing
Lignites."
The researchers will study they
sediments produced in they
swampy environment and will
compare them with older coal
and lignite beds found in other
parts of the country. Modern'
counterparts of these older beds)
now are forming in the Florida
swamps, Spackman explains.
He feels that through studies
of these newer sediments, light
will be shed on the nature of old
er organic materials, including
uranium-bearing coals and lig
nites.
