MAY 8. 1939 Werner Revises Lineup For Spartan Spike Meet Track mentor Chick Werner has made several changesi from last Saturday's lineup in placing his runners for the meet with Michigan State tomorrow on Beaver Field. Penn State track fans will see different runners in four events when the Lions encounter the undefeated Spartans. The 'mile, 2-mile, 880-yard and * * * 440-yard entries will be realigned for the Nittany spike aggrega tion. Bennie Johnson and Herm We ber will replace Dick Engelbrink and Chick King in the mile run. Engelbrink and King will thus be relieved of this event so that they can concentrate on their special ties. Captain Ed Moran will head the,Lion mile entries. Engelbrink will run only in the 2-mile where he will meet his stiffest competition of the year in the Spartans' Forddy Kennedy. Engelbrink. IC4-A in door 2-mile titleholder, has registered a best outdoor time of 5:12.8 this spring. Kennedy was , the NCAA cr ss-country, champion last fall a d boasts a top career clocking f 9:04.3 for The distance. Engel rink's re lease from obligati its in the mile will allow hi to go all out' in the longest distance run. Engelbrink will be joined in the Nittany lineup 'by distance ace Fred Kerr, who ran in the 880-yard run against Ohio State. King, who doubled in the mile and 2-mile against the Buckeyes, will 'return to his old race—the half,mile. King ran the season's eighth fastest half-mile in the country when he set the Navy track record in a dual meet with the 'Middies in April. George Jones, who picked un'a third placq last week, and Bill Schwab will he the other Lion 880 entries. Other Lion changes are in the quarter-mile where Don Davies and" Dave LaHoff will run in place of hurdler Bob Szeyller and Schwab. The 440 threesome will be paced by last week's winner, Dick Hambright. Davies wan the 880 fast Sat urday with a fast time of 1:54.1 and adds strength to the Lion 440-yard entry. With Werner's revised lineup, one of the middle and long dis tance runners will have to double in running events. The sprint trio of Bobby Brown, Blaine O'Connor, and George Metzgar will' run the 100 and 220-yard dashes for the Nittany spikers. Brown was a double winner In Alpha Chi Siq Stems Sigma Pi In IM Soccer Sigma Pi, in a hard fought IM soccer tilt last night, lost to Alpha Chi Sigma by a score of 3-2. In the first half, the lead switched back and forth several times as both teams displayed strong of fensive maneuvers. Alpha Chi Sigma entered the scoring column in the first min utes of the game as they quickly booted in a goal from about 10 feet out. Sigma Pi then took com mand as they suddenly broke loose for a goal and a corner kick to take a one to nothing lead. Szeyller won the lows against the Bucks in 25.1 seconds and Fareira gained an upset win in the highs with a clocking of 15.3.1 The javelin throw will feature the Lion triumvirate of Andy Nyce, who won the event at Na vy, Bill Schwab, who captured the Penn Relays crown, and Jon Musser, who recorded the win ning toss against Ohio State. Pole vaulters Ron Beard and Dick Gross, who tied with the Bucks' Dick Bowers. at 13' Me last week, felt confident that they can clear 14 feet tomorrow. Dale Peters is the third member of the Lions' outstanding vault crew. John Tullar and Nyce will hurl the shot and discus and will be joined in the latter event by Mus ser and Jim Wambold. Tullar flipped the shot 50''/a" for a gold medal in the Ohio State meet and also took a second in the discus. Mel Ramey and John Fareira will high jump for the Nittanies and Barney and Gross will handle the chores at the broad jumpinv. pit. Golf OKLAHOMA CITY (AM—Young Tommy Jacobs slammed in two eagles and four birdies to take the first round lead yesterday in the i $25,000 Oklahoma City Open Golf Tournament with a sizzling six-1 lunder-par 66. The 24-year-old Whitier, sharpshooter, now in his second l year on the Professional Golfers Assn. tour, whittled the tough' Twin Hills Country Club course down to size and managed to gain a one-stroke lead over veteran Pete Mazur 'of Buffalo, N.Y. It was a day of disappointment for most of the field of 150 play lers. The tightly-designed 6,604- yard course with its par of 36-36- 72 turned back the challenge of some bf the game's greatest shot makers. Mazur's round includes six bir dies and one bogey. This year's game will be played under the lights on Hopkin's Homewood Field, with * * play getting under way at 9 p.m. Ben Martin, coach of the Mas sachusetts Institute of Technol ogy lacrosse team, has been named head coach of the North team. Jim Adams, Army's coach, was also given an assistant coaching spot along with Baer. For the South team. Charlie Wentael, the Loyola coach, was given the head coaching job. Howard Knuttgen, Ohio State's coach, and Eugene Corrigan. the Washington and Lee men tor, were named as assistant coaches for the South team. The. North team as well as the South will be made up of 21 senior players, who will most likely be playing in their last game. The head coach of each team along with the recommen dations of his assistant coaches, selects the 21 players for his re spective team. These selections ,should be announced by May 20. Each team is comoosed of nine midfielders, five defensemen, Five attackmen, and two goalies. This year's team will be picked out of 35 players that have been nomi nated. On June 2 the two teams will meet in Baltimore for three days of practice sessions before the 'game on June 5. The North-South game is al ways well publicized in the Baltimore area as is evidenced by the thousands of people who turn out' for the games. This game is for the most part a publicity 'stunt used to promote the sport of lacrosse. The contest helps to bring in revenue for the United States Intercollegiate La crosse Association. Several col leges bid yearly for the honor of i holding the game on their' respec- I time campus. This year's game will most likely prove to be a tie breaker as each team has registered eight wins in the 19 years with one game going to a 14-14 tie. In last year's game, the South team scored a complete romo as they walloped the North, 26.6. The only Lion player on the North team that year was mid fielder Fred Donahoe, who was named as an All-American hon orable mention midfielder.
