First in Competition
The women's varsity debate team placed first in the East
ern Forensic Association Sweepstakes at St. Peter's College,
Jersey City, N.J., last weekend.

Dance Concert
The Women's Recreation Asso
ciation Dance Club will present
its annual dance concert tomor
row, Friday and Saturday at 8
p.m. in White Hall
'rickets for the concert will be
available today and tomorrow
horn 1:00 to 5,00 p.m. in the main
offices of White Ilan.
The show will be presented in
two parts by the Orchesis, the
modern dance group of WRA.
Part 1 is called Modern American
Muses which is adapted from the
Gieek Muses and interpreted
through the eyes of the 20th cen
tury. Pai t II will be "Interpreta
tion"
The WRA Clothing drive began
last Saturday and will continue
until Saturday. This is an annual
affair in which WRA assists the
Women':: Club of State College.
Clothing boxes have been placed
in all dormitories, Redifer Dining
Hall, Waring and the HUB. Only
clean clothes will be accepted.
Shoes may also be contributed to
the chive.
Psych Club Will Meet
Dr. William M. Smith Jr, pro-1
fessor of family relations. will
speak to the Psychology Club at
7:30 tonight in 216 Willard. The
subject of his talk is "How Court
ship and Marriage is Related to
Psychology."

peted in the debating event.
They debated the topic "Re
solved: that further develop
ment of nuclear weapons be
prohibited by interns lional
agreement."
Miss O'Donnell and Miss Bentz
debated the affirmative side.
They won over St. Peter's Col
lege, The University of Massachu
setts, Lehigh University, Seton
(Hall and Dartmouth University.
They lost to Fordham Education
College.
Miss Gemmill and Miss Dona
van debated the negative side.
They defeated LeMoyne College,
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy,
Morgan State University and
Penn State men. They lost to St.
Joseph's College and Misericordia
College.
Miss Gemmill also placed fifth
in the extemporaneous event,
Leonard Julius, SGA president,
took first place in the persuasive
speaking contest for men.
The other members of the men's
team are Alan Davidson, Junior
in arts and letters from Clear
field; Theodore Haller, junior in
electrical engineering from Brad
ford; and Arthur Ichter, junior in
business administration from Ash
ley.

99 Men Tapped for 6 Hat Societies

Ninety-nine men were
tapped last week for mem
bership in six hat societies
—Parmi Nous, Skull and
Bones, Blue Key, Androcles,
Druids and Delphi.
Members must apply to these
societies and ale chosen by All-
University average and on a
point system which rates major
and minor activities.

At Ceremony
Lois Neubarth, junior in jour
nalism from East Orange, N.J.,
was awarded the Associated Edi
tor's Society of Pittsburgh award
last night for interest in the field
of industrial journalism.
Jeffrey Pollack, sophomore in
journalism from Laurelton, N.Y.,
won a cash award of $3O from
Sigma Delta Chi, men's profes
sional journalism fraternity, as the
outstanding sophomore.
The SDX scholarship awards
were given to Mary Kelly, an
August 1958 graduate with a 3.86
average; Mrs. Lois Clark, senior
from Bellefonte, with a 3.78 aver
age; and Mary Reed, senior from
State College, with a 3.58 aver
age.
The Foley Agency of Philadel
phia award to an advertising ma
jor went to Dawson Ryder of Port
Matilda.

Science Foundation to Award
1000 Graduate Fellowships
The National Science Founda
tion will award approximately
1000 Cooperative Graduate Fel
lowships in science for the aca
deniic year 1959-60.
Applications will be available
in the Graduate School office in
June, and must be returned for
consideration early in the Fall.
The fellowships will be awarded
to any citizen of the United States
who has demonstrated the ability
and special aptitude required for
advanced training in the sciences.
All applicants will be required to
take an examination to test their
scientific and scholastic aptitude
and achievement.
Applicants will be screened first
by the institution through which
they have applied and again by
panels of scientists chosen by the
National Academy of Sciences Na
tional Research Council. Final se
lection will be made by the Na
tional Science Foundation.
The annual stipend for the fel
lowships will be $2200 which may
be supplemented by the partici-
'Purloined' Palm
Found in Nittany
The case of the "purloined palm"
has been solved.
The potted palm which was'
missing from the Hetzel Union
ballroom after the Leonides fash
ion show last Wednesday was
found by the Campus Patrol in
the Nittany area this weekend.
The palm will be returned to
Bill McMullen, who had donated
it and two others for the fashion
show. Leonides had been `con
cerned with the possibility of bad .
effects on student-town relations,
especially with local merchants.
