Arnold -Air Society .
Encourages Debating
The University's Arnold Air Society is engaged in a plan
to encourage the formation of debating teams to aid in the
training of officers, according to Capt. Norman M. Winter,
assistant professor of Air Science.
Capt. Winter, adviser to the society, said that the project
is in its early stages and at pre
sent "our main interest is to get
as many members of the Arnold
Air Society interested as -possi
ble."
The society, a national organi
zation, is an honorary fraternity
of cadets. enrolled in the Air
Force ROTC program.
The idea for the debate teams
came up at a December meeting
of the- society's Pennsylvania
S q u a d r on Commanders. Plans
were then made to form debate
teams and have a tournament.
On Feb. 3 four members of the
University's debate team staged
a sample debate for the cadets.
"It was an attempt to generate
enthusiasm for debate since none
of our members are on the varsity
team," Winter said.
The University's cadet debators
won the first round of the tourna
ment held at Duquesne Univer
sity Feb. 28 when they defeated
cadets from Duquesne and the
Uinversity of Pittsburgh. The
topic was: "Resolved that the
United States should adopt a pol
icy of unification of the Armed
Forces." .
