FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 19 Koh!ha's, Berfield Sidelin-cl by Injuries If Rip Engle's footballers bang opponents around next fall the way they're slamming each other now, they should make out all right. Right now six gridders, including five lettermen, are nursing injuries received during spring drills. Center Wayne Berfield and guard Bud Kohlhaas have been hit hardest. Berfield broke his arm last night in practice and Kohlhaas cracked an ankle bone last Saturday. Two halfbacks—Jim Kerr and Dick Hoak—are also on the doc tor's list even though they worked out last night. Kerr is nursing an ankle injury and Hoak is recovering from a pain ful sprained jaw. Sam Stellatela, another line man, resumed practice last night, after being sidelined with a chip ped ankle bone and Bill Peters a freshman quarterback is tak ing light workouts. because of a bad knee. Engle is- hoping that most of the injuries will be cleared up by May 2 when the Lions play the first of two Blue-White games. The reason for tlo games this year is that th ee early practices were rained out and Engle decided to extend drills an extra week in order to get in the alloted 20 days practice. The second game will be played May 9 and that will wind up spring drills. "Now we can give the losing team from the week before a chance to get back at the winners," said Engle with a smile. Engle also said that he has been pleased with the progress of his team this spring. "The boys have shown a lot of hustle and desire out there this spring," he said,,, "and I hope it carries over to the fall." Backfield coach Joe Paterna also was pleased with the progress made so far. "The backfield has been looking good, but we're still looking for that break away run ner," he said. "As far as quarterback gees, SENIOR r BALL with cr7,) BUDDY RICH AND HIS ORCHESTRA Friday, May 1 Rec Hall $5.00 per couple semi-formal ( THE DAILY COLLEGIAN STATE COLLEGE. PENNSYLVANIA Bud Kohlhaas . . . injured gridder Richie Lucas is doing a great job and this freshman boy Gal en Hall also has been looking good," Paterno said. "We're still going to move Dick Hoak to quarterback, though, to give him some experience just in case we need him in an emer gency." Hoak was an all-WPIAL quar terback in high school, but was switched to halfback last fall.
