TUESDAY. APRIL 21, 1959 Stickmen As Beh ON THE HEAD—Hank Schilling (right), Penn State midfielder, tries to dodge a stick-wielding Hobart defenseman in Saturday's game which the Lions won, 11-3. By BILL BARBER Although hampered by lack of leadership in the midfield, the Penn State lacrosse team won a decisive 11-3 victory over Hobart Saturday. "Our midfield play looked rath er ragged out there Saturday," stated Coach Earnie Baer, "Only the heavy scoring of John Behne kept us as far ahead as we were," Baer went on. "However, our defense was hacking up better and Dave Wil kinson, our goalie, looked a lot better because his ankle is heal ing," said Coach Baer. The Lions were lacking two of their top midfielders Bob Swanson and Chip Henderson. Swanson, the chief playmaker of the team has been out since the Navy game but probably will see action at Cornell to morrow. Henderson was injured in the Penn game but should also travel to Cornell. The way the stickmen stilted off, it looked like they were head ing for disaster. In the first 20 seconds of play Larry Atkinson charged from the faceoff and raced downfield unopposed to tally the first goal for IL•bart. For two full minutes hie Nit tany stickmen looked like the team that went down before Navy by the crushing score of 29-3. Their play was sloppy as Hobart kept control of the ball most of the time. But finally Behne was able to post himself in front of the Ho bart nets, and, snagging a short c l pass from Jim Kane, h complete ly outfaked the Hobart goalie and whipped it through 1 r the first Lion tally. A minute later, , ith Ray rrrrirrri" Whip Hobart Tallies Five Tuleya in the penalty box, Ho hart pushed into the lead for its second and last time on an other goal by Atkinson. The Lions finally tied it up three minutes later when Kane caught a pass from Dick Ham mond and fired it through for the goal. Five minutes later the Baermen surged ahead on one of the best scoring plays of the game. Dick ;Janda started the play deep in Lion territory by taking a pass from the Lion defense. Janda ran it out to midfield, passed off to Hammond who in turn charged upfield. Hammond passed off to Dick Bullock in front of the goal and he pivoted around for the score. Behne had one of his best goals of the game when he took a pass from Tuleya, and charg ed through the Hobart defense for a goal-bound whipping shot at the goal. At the very beginning of the second quarter, Behne came through once again when he took a pass from Hammond, who had won a faceoff. Although he was opposed by two Hobart defense men, Behne charged through and unleased a shot that caught the goaltender completely off guard. From then on the Lions were unbeatable as they piled up goal after goal. Behne scored two more to bring his total to five, while Bullock scored twice in the fourth period for his three tallies. Kane followed with two markers and Bill McDonough managed to grab a tally in the final minute of the game. Dave Wilkinson played one of his best games this year as he chalked up 13 saves and held the Hobart attack to three goals.
