An ICBM nose cone of tomorrow
was fired 5000 miles down the
Atlantic aboard a powerful Thor-
Able locket yesterday and pluck

When the cone was hauled onto
the deck of an Air Force ship
near Ascension Island two hours
after launching, it marked the
first time that recovery was ac
complished on a flight close to
the intercontinental range.
The spectacular shoot in the
! early moaning hours was the
seventh nose cone re-entry flight
close to intercontinental range in
a year.
Air Force officials said the
main objective was to receive
telemetry—an electronic picture
—of the cone's re-entry through
the earth's atmosphere. The re
covery was an additional bonus
that would prove out the tele
metry data received, they added.
The Thor-Able, a time-tested,
80-foot, two-stage rocket planted
the cone on target after a 5000-
mile flight in minutes.
