Maryland Ace to Miss Penn State Kegler
In ABC Tourney
Penn State Link Opener
Maryland will be missing its top golfer this afternoon
when the Terps meet the Nittany Lions at College Park, Md.
in the season's opener.
Dale Beman, a U.S. Walker Cup choice, is playing in the
Master's tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
Beman's first round score of 74
put him in a tie for 19th place.
But his score was the third best
among the amateurs entered in
the tourney.
Because of Beman's absence
Coach Joe Boyle's boys should
have it a little easier. Boyle now
can put his men in more strategic
places in the Lion lineup.
Bill Davidson, EIGA golf cham
pion, is expected to lead the Lions
today as they go after their 12th
straight win. Additional help is
expected from Scott Stultz and
Roy Altman. Stultz was unde
feated last year and Altman
helped the Lions win many close
matches.
The rest of the lineup is corn- ,
posed of new faces including
Haydn Thomas and John Morton
who have never seen a varsity
match.
The sixth member of the team
will be Dick Burgoon. Burgoon,
a transfer student from Franklin
and Marshall, is highly rated by
Boyle and is expected to give the
Golfsters some added help.
The last time the linksmen
faced Maryland was in 1957 when,
they won a close 4-3 decision.

a brand new course today. This,
course, built by Maryland Uni
versity, was dedicated last July
4th; thus this will be Mayland's
first match on the new links.

Penn State . . . He was captain of

8-4 record .. . State has only had
three golf coaches since golf be

Bob Rutherford was the Nittany
coach from 1922-1949. He compiled

Mel Royer, one of Penn State's
top bowlers, has been- chosen to
compete in the American Bowling
Congress' Intercollegiate bowling
tournament to be held April 9
in St, Louis.
Royer, a member of Alpha Tau
Omega, has consistently been one
of the best intramural bowlers in
the last 3 years. He has led his
team to 28 straight points in frat
ernity league C competition this
season.

Royer has been bowling for
many years in his home town
of Lancaster. He participated
in the regional division of the
State tourney in 1945 and '49
and in 1947 he went to the State
tourney.
Royer was picked to compete
in the ABC's becaue of his per
formance in the Association of
College Student Unions tourna
ment. In that tourney, colleges
and universities were asked to
pick their top keglers and have
them compete in a rolloff. The
events were broken down into
team scores, doubles and high sin
gles.
The tourney, itself, is broken
down into regions. Penn State is
in Region, 11. In each region, the
high doubles team, the top two
singles rollers and the entire top
team receive awards. A new slant
was opened when the American
Machine and Foundry Corpora
tion offered to pay the meet ex
penses for the top two bowlers of
each region.
Don Watkins, assistant director
of intramurals, arranged the
tournament here. He selected 12
men to participate.
Royer rolled a 161-205-183 for
a 529 series in the individual
competition. In the doubles, he
had a 190-215-191 for a 596
series. In the tingles, he rolled
a 192-156465 for a 513. This
game him a total of 1638 pins, -
I enough to be top bowler in the
region.
The team which bowled for the
prizes consisted of: Royer, Don
Costanza, Lou Klukosky, Jack
Neifert, Don Kissinger and Bill

IM director, this team took about
every prize offered in the 'region.
Right behind Royer In the
competition for the trip were Don
Costanzo and Lou Klukosky.
Both 'men bowl for the All Stars
in IM competition. This team set
an alley record earlier this year
for the best single team, game.
Klukosky was a scant 10 pins
behind foyer, rolling a high
game of 234 for 1828 total pins.
