There is nothing like opening a season against the best.
Penn State will be doing this when the golfers open against
the University of Maryland at College Park tomorrow.
And the Terrapins have one of the nation's leading
amateurs in the person of Dale Beamon. Beamon has been
selected to play on the U.S. Walk
er Cup team which will face the
top English amateurs this sum
mer. However, Beamon has been
invited to play in the Masters
Tournament held in Augusta, Ga.
this weekend. If he decides to at
tend he will miss the Lion match.
Should Beamon - play, Lion
mentor Joe Boyle will have an
effective antidote in Bill David
son. Davidson, who is Eastern
golf champ, is also one of the
best collegiate players in the
nation.
Although Boyle is unsure of
his strategy, he does have an ace
or two in the hole. These are
Scott Stulz and Roy Altman.
Stultz was undefeated last year
in mach play and Altman drop
ped one and that was a close
match in the Pitt meet.
Rounding out the lineup will

he decide to change his lineup.
One disadvantage that the
Lions will be up against is that
Maryland uses a different scor
ing system than is recognized in
EIGA play. The Eastern Golf As
sociation uses regular match play
in which players compete with
each other on the basis of the
best score for each hole. Mary
land uses a combined Nassau sys
tem and best ball play.
Despite this, the Lion golfers
have an excellent chance to con
tinue their 11 match winning
streak.
