to open the 1959 season Saturday when it entertains Loyola
of Baltimore at 2 p.m. on Beaver Field.

Seem Clinched on Lion 'Nine'
With opening day less than a
week away, Joe Bedenk's base
bailers had to miss another full
scale practice session due to bad
weather.
The muddy field didn't keep
the Lion batterymen from work
ing out, though, and the rest of
,the squad managed to get in a
little throwing and a few games
of pepper.
But time is precious now as
far as the Nittany nine is con
cerned, for its opening day op
ponent Wednesday—Gettysburg
—has already beaten Syracuse,
9-0, and plays Wilkes College
tomorrow.
Bedenk hasn't figured out who
will be in the starting lineup
when the season starts next week.
Only two positions —second
base and shortstop--could he
called "set" as of yesterday.

Bedenk also has his leading
hitter back in senior Doug
Caldwell, but the Lion outfield
er has been student teaching
and only began practicing a
week ago.
Caldwell hit .333 last year pla
tooning with Joe Moore in center
field. There's no doubt, in any
one's mind that he can hit right
handers but he is still a question
mark against the southpaws.
The only other experienced re
turnee is pitcher Ron Riese who
finished with a 6-1 log last sea
son. He will undoubtedly be the
number one hurler this year.
"After that, you tell me," said
Bedenk. "I'd have to say that
this is one of the most inexper
ienced teams I've had."
That, incidentally, takes in a
span of 30 years as a Lion coach.
