West Lines Up to Meet
Soviets on German Issue
PARIS (/P)---The West has lined up solidly behind a pro
posal to meet the Soviets in Geneva, probably in May, to
tackle the dangerous issue of Germany, informed sources
reported yesterday.

session the United States "is hope
ful—but not to optimistic" the
Berlin crises can be settled
through negotiation.
Eisenhower. who has been un
der Democratic fire on grounds
that he is to interested in holding
down on spending, got support
from GOP leaders in Congress.
"He puts defense of our country
ahead of budget requirements,"

weekly White House session of
party leaders with the President.

Snark Missile Performs

—A jet-powered Snark, destined
to be the nation's first opera
tional inter continental range
missile, returned to the cape with
out a scratch yesterday after com
pleting a highly successful round
trio ocean flight.
The launching, which sources
said ran smoothly several thou
sand miles down range and back,
was one of the final tuneups for
the sleek missile that will soon
be deployed at strategic bases.

to the Soviet Union and were
united on a place and time. But
they declined to go into details.
The West will reply to a So
viet note of March 2 suggesting
a foreign ministers meeting in
Geneva or Vienna in April if
the West is unwilling to meet
at the summit on the ( German
question.
The French spokesman said the
West will insist that only the
United States, Britain, France and
the Soviet Union deal with Ger
man problems.
The Soviet Union suggested
Communist Poland and Czecho
slovakia attend the foreign min
isters conference and both nations
have agreed to go. The West will
say it has no objection to Poland
and Czechoslovakia sitting in on
matters dealing with Germany's
neighbors, the French spokesman
said.
The West will also ask that
the agenda not be limited to 1
the question of the future of
Berlin and a German peace
treaty, the French source re
ported.
The solid front on a note to the
Soviet Union was announced as
Prime Minister Harold Macmil
lan of Britain wound up two days
of talks with French leaders de
signed to coordinate Western
strategy on Germany once the
powers are gathered at the con
ference table.
Oil Imports Restricted
WASHINGTON (Ill—The gov
ernment yesterday imposed re
strictions on imports of crude
oil, gasoline and other principal
petroleum products.
The mandatory controls replace
a voluntary program which has
been in operation since mid-197.
The new controls are effective
Wednesday in the case of crude
oil and unfinished oils, and on
April 1 in the case of gasoline
and other finished products.
President Eisenhower ordered
the new controls under legisla
tion which permits such action
to safeguard the national security.

Space Research Bill
Approved by Senate
WASHINGTON (IP)—Without a dissent, the Senate voted
yesterday to authorize every penny the Eisenhower adminis
tration asked for stepped-up spending on civilian space re
search this fiscal year.
Nearly half of the $48,354,000 in the bill would go into
Project Mercury, a program look
ing toward space flight by man.
The Senate acted on a 90-0 roll
call vote after hearing Sen. John
Stennis (D-Miss) say "the threat
to our security could be disas
trous" if an enemy nation beat
the United States in developing a
space vehicle capable of unleash
ing nuclear weapons.
The actual money would be
provided in separate legislation
later. Lt would be used by the
National Aeronautics and Space
Administration during the re
mainder of ,this fiscal year.

don B. Johnson of Texas noted
the Senate was voting the exact
amount requested by the Eisen
hower administration for NASA.
But Johnson, chairman of the
Senate Space Committee, said
he wanted it known this was no
rubber stamp action, that it

Simultaneously, Johnson said
his committee has decided to put
off action on a request for $485
million for the coming fiscal year.
The delay is to allow completion
of a special subcommittee in
vestigation of possible duplica
tion and interservice rivalry in
the space program.

Higher Sales Tax
HARRISBURG (A--Gov. Law
rence's proposal to expand the
sales tax ran into stonewall oppo
sition in the House Democratic
caucus yesterday.
The outcry behind closed doors
seemed to have reached a cres
cendo that threatened the life of
the measure unless a compromise
is achieved.
Rank-and-file Democrats said
privately that sentiment was
building up to knock out pro
visions extending the sales levy
to trade-ins on automobiles and
to across-the-bar drinking.
