A trio of gymnastic stars will be added to the Penn State
marquee this weekend—and not a show too soon. For this is
the weekend the revenge-minded Lions meet their toughest
opponent—Army, the Eastern team champion.
Heading the list of returnees is Olympian and Captain
(now it can be known) Armando'
Vega. Also on the eligibility list
for the spring semester are ace
tumbler Graeme Cowan and ver
satile Lee Cunningham, both jun

Bui the performer with the
most experience—and the press
clippings lo prove ii—is Vega.
After a layoff of a year, Vega
will aid the Lion drive to re
gain the Eastern and National
team titles he almost single
handedly won in 1957.
During the 1957 NCAA’s, Vega
scored 56% of the Lions’ 88%
winning points. In the process he
won the Eastern and National
free exercise, still rings, long
horse and parallel bar events for
the second straight year. He also
won the NCAA and AAU all
around title in ’57.
Since the ’57 season, he has de
feated Europe’s best at the gym
nastics Grand Prix at Barcelona,
Spain, and competed in the World
Championships at Moscow.
The'second triple-threat man,
Cunningham, also becomes eli

mate Jay Werner who has done
the brunt of the scoring to date.
Cunningham specializes in the
side horse event. He also flashes
a formfull routine on the high
bar that earned him three firsts
last year (all 260 or better scores).
The lean blond has worked the
parallels and tumbling for his
third event and can also be. used
on the rings.
As an all-around man during
his sophomore year, he finished
second in the East. He was beaten
in the last event by teammate
Werner, 1515-1514.
Cowan, a junior, is a special
ist in tumbling. Last year he
defeated teammate Dave Du
laney in two of the six dual
meets (for those not in the
know, Dulaney is the Eastern
tumbling champ.)
