Walker fold the committee it
was necessary "to find methods
for Identifying superior feach- !
ing ability in order that we
might reward excellence." He
noted that it was becoming in
creasingly difficult to attract
new talent and also to retain
present personnel.
"It is relatively easy to meas
ure administrative ability because
the effectiveness of the adminis
trator shows up almost immedi
ately in the operation of the or
ganization," Walker said. The
same thing is also true of the
research worker, he said.
Since we have no comparable
methods by which we can meas
ure teaching ability, Walker said,
advancement is usually slower
than it is in other types of pro
fessional work. “We must correct
this situation if we are going to
compete successfully with admin
istration and research for the
most able young men and wom
len," he said.
Serving on the committee
with Lancaster will be Mrs. Jes
sie Bernard, professor of soci
ology; Dr. H. M. David, profes
sor of chemical metallurgy; Dr.
John J. Gibbons, professor of
physics; Dr. Hacel M. Hatcher,
professor of home economics
education and home-community
relations.
John D. Lawther, professor of
physical education; Dr. William
M. Lepley. professor of psychol
ogy; Dr. Owen H. Sauerlender,
lecturer in economics; and Dr.
J. E. Wright, associate professor
of genetics, were also appointed.
