PAGE SIX lagers Win at Home, 71 mg 60 Hancock Scores 20 In Ist Win Sy SANDY PADWE There's no place like home for the holidays and for the Penn State cagers there's no place like Recreation Hall for basketball games. After losing their first two games at North Carolina State and West Virginia the Nittanies won their fir:-,t game of the sea lion beating Gettysburg, 71-60, be fore a Recreation Hail crowd of 3500. Tom Hancock's scoring and re bounding plus the all-around performances of Wally Colander and Mark DuMars were the main factors in the Lion win. It was these three who com bined efforts to pull the Lions back into contention after Gettys burg jumped to an early 6-0 lead. Hancock hit a jumper for the Lions' first score. Then DuMars hit on a push and foul to put the Lions three behind, 8-5 Colender hit on two straight jump shots and Hancock collected two free throws to put the Lions ahead 11-8 Two more buckets— one by Ted Kubista and the other by DuMars gave the Lions a 15-8 cushion and Gettysburg never caught up. The Bullets made a few strong bids to go ahead and narrowed the gap to 26-22 at halftime. Right at the start of the sec ond halt the Lions iced the game as Bob Edwards, Hancock and Colander hit from all over and built the Lion lead up to 50-33. Gettysburg made a determined bid to cut down the lead but they couldn't get any closer than eight points, With Hancock pulling down _rebounds and Colender and DuMars fast breaking, the Lions broke up any serious drives that the Bullets could start. The fast break is something new in the Penn State offense. Last year the Lions didn't use it much. But with the addition of DuMars to the backcourt the Lions can now run with almost any team. Hancock led the Lions in scor ing as he tallied 20 points. Ac cording to Lion coach John Egli this was one of Hancock's best showings since he donned the Blue & White four years ago. "Tommy didn't play just a good game, he played a great game," said Egli.' "If he keeps it up and the rest of the big men come around we're really going to be touch to stop." "The team really played an im proved brand of ball. Even though they were a little sloppy I think they'll iron out the rough spots in due time." the Lion mentor added. REIM behind Hancock in the scoring department were Du- Mars with 18 and Colender with 16. DuMars now is the leader in scoring with 45 points in three games for an average of 15 points per game.
