FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5 All-Am Experi Three of last y starting lineup whe cagers Saturday nig isn't too worried. Depth, experienFed returnees, good shooters and an All-American named Jerry West have helped Schaus forget the losses of Lloyd Sharrar, Don Vin cent and Joedy Gardner. In most cases the loss of three top-notch b a 11- players such as these would hurt any team—espe cially one tha t finished so high in th e nation's ratings last year —but it hasn't seemed to harm the Mounties. They have already won two games this year beating Furman, 76-67, and VMI, 82-71 West has been the rnain gun for West Virginia as he tallied 29 points against Furman and 19 against VMI. West's basket ball talents aren't limited to scoring. The 6.3 West is a power off the backboards and last year he gathered in 311 rebounds -second only to the 6-10 Shar rar. This year West is slated to see action in the backcourt as well as up front. If he starts at guard, Give Somethin That Will Contluei Cold Weather... 'ar's starters will be missing from the West Virginia plays host to the Lion t but Mountaineer Coach Fred Schaus co-captain Bob Smith will be out front with him. Smith is one of the most under rated performers in the country, according to one of the coaches in the Southern Conference. Smith is a 2-year letterman who has I been overshadowed by the play of Hot Rod Hundley and West the past two years. But last year he proved his value to Mountie fans by averaging 12.4 points per game and leading the, team in assists with 104. Willie Akers, a reserve last year, and Jim Ritchie, a sopho more, will probably start at the forward slots but nothing is defi nite. The 6-5 Akers was one of Schaus' top subs a year ago and this year Sc ha us expects big things from him. • The center position will be filled by 6-6 Bob Clousson who was seventh man last year. Clousson played only about ten minutes per gpme last year but he averaged five points a game and had a sensational shooting average of 60.5. Schaus has a strong reserve corps to back up his starters, in cluding co-captain Ronnie Retton. t i i EAU THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA AP Names Dawkins To All-Americari Bp 808 HOOBING Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (iP) —Army halfback Pete Dawkins and Auburn guard Zeke Smith il lustrate the deter mination and versatility which mark the members of the 1958 Asso ciated Press All-American foot- NEW YORK (A 3) Pennsyl vania college players who re ceived honorable mention on the 1958 All-America Football Team selected by The Asso ciated Press: Ends --: Gene °Pella.
