Penn State's grid clash with West Vnginia tomorrow afternoon
at NToigantown shapes up as mme than a traditional battle between
No old rivals. It's a "inui,t2 win for both teams—and they realize it.
_As for the Lions, they need the victory to help silence their
ci hies—who have been having a field day since the surprising open
ing season loss to Nebraska. A win wouldn't do the job completely,
for two more tough encounters--with Holy Cross and Pitt—remain
on the Nittany schedule. But it would start the Blue and White
forces off in the right direction.
Down Morgantown way, the Mounties need a win to help sal
vage what has been one of the most disappointing seasons in their
history. Rated in pre-season predictions as the best team in Coach
Peppy Lewis' 7-year regime, the Mounties have been anything
but outstanding. They won their opener against weak Richmond,
66-22, but were blasted by Oklahoma, Indiana, Boston University
and Pitt on successive weekends before edging VPI two weeks
ago.
West Virginia also is trying to overcome criticism—that of not
being able to win against any team outside the Southern Conference.
All of their conquests this year have come in the SC—Richmond,
VPI and George Washington.
But returning to Penn State, the Lions have been castigated
from almost every corner for their play this season. First it was
that humiliating Nebraska loss. Then the thrashing by Army. And
finally the Syracuse disaster. And with Holy Cross and Pitt follow
ing West Virginia, many Lion "fans" have been talking in terms
of a losing season—the first one in 20 years at Penn State.
Add to this the comments concerning Penn State's expected
easy victories over "weak" opponents—i.e., Penn, Marquette and
Furman—and it is understandable why the West Virginia game
is a must
But can Penn State do it 9 We'll have to be honest and express
our fears—not our doubts, but fears, We feel the Lions can win
the rest of thee• games if they play good, sound and solid football.
But will they? That's the big question.
On certain games they've looked like they could handle the
best the nation could offer. But on other occasions, they've looked
just the opposite. We thought they had found themselves against
Bostbn U , but we were wrong. There's still something missing—
but what it is remains a mystery to this reporter.
Maybe it's the lack of an outstanding pass-catching end. If so,
Maury Schleicher could help solve that. Or maybe it was the need
of a solid, injury -less backfield. There hasn't been a week go by
that the Lions have been at full strength—including this week.
But maybe the return of Pat Botula and Dave Kasperian to their
old form will be the answer.
We hope the Lions can discover that missing link tomorrow.
This is a fine group of football players with much potential. They
deserve a better fate than they have had. Now is the time to strike
back. Can they do it ...?

While soccer isn't big in the
