UCA Helps
125 Grads
Find Rooms

About 125 graduate inter
national students, turned out,
of campus housing, have been
able to find accommodations
in town with the help of a
survey conducted last spring
by the University Christian
Association and the State
College Ministerium.
However, many of the students
have questioned the validity of
the survey, since, many times,
upon applying in person for a
room, they were turned down, re
portedly because of color or na
tional origin.
These students stated they
had been given an optimistic
reply on the telephone but were
stalled or refused when appear
ing personally to secure the
rooms.

contacted a total of 450 home-

The number of international
students who must seek rooms
off-campus has increased this
year because of the closing of
Pollock Circle and a University
decision to allow only under
graduates to live in the resi
dence halls, Mrs. Doerner, of
the Office of International Stu
dent Affairs, said.
Pollock 5 had been used to
house approximately 30 ma 1r
international students, and many
graduate women students lived
with unciergraduatd women in the
residence halls. Since these facili
ties could no longer be used,
town housing became imperative,
and harder to obtain.
International students were
alloted 13 spaces in Graduate
Hall and seven fraternities have
invited international students to
live with them as guests, Mrs.
Doerner said. This has helped
somewhat to alleviate the hous
ing shortage, she said. But,
Mrs, Doerner said, while no
students are without rooms at
the present time, the situation
is expected to grow worse.
She said that because of these
difficulties, the University will
not be able to increase the num
ber of international students ad
nutted beyond the present 205
quota until at least 1960.
Boalsburg Group
Will Hold Rodeo
The Black Hawk Riding Club
of Boalsburg will hold its fall
rodeo at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the rodeo
grounds on Rt. 322 across from
the Veterans of Foreign Wars at
Potters Mills.
The program will include hide,
key, tire and costume races, steer
decorating, calf roping, apple
race, clover leaf class, trail class
and pole bending.
In event of rain the show will
be postponed until Oct. 12 at the
same time and place.
Admission will be 50 cents a
person.
State English Teachers
Gather for Conference
The conference of the Penn
sylvania Council of Teachers of
English will be held today and
tomorrow at the Hetzel Union
Building.
Main speaker will be Moses
Hada, Columbia University pro
fessor of Greek, who will talk at
the luncheon today on "The
Permanence of the Classics."

So far, with one week under their belt, our sports predictors
aren't exactly setting the world afire.
Leading the pack with .466 percent are the coaches, led last
week by Rip Engle. Tied for second place are the two aces of the
Collegian sports department, Mad Matt Mathews and Lucky Lou
Prato. Both garnered a .333. Trailing far in the dust last week was
Genial George French. He ended up with a roaring .200.
If there is safety at all in numbers, our boys should In right this
week. All agree that Army will win over South Carolina. (They all
thought Maryland would trounce Wake Forest too!) They also agree
on Ohio State's beating Southern Methodist. (They picked Oregon
State over USC too.)
