He also said he was embar rassed to admit to many of the students, under their barrage of questions, that the average Amer ican college student knew very little about South America. During one cocktail party in Caracas, Venezuela, where the students and the journalism di rector were said to be extremely "left," Marbut was "put on the pan" for hours with questions about American reaction to the 'ordeal that Vice President Rich ard M. The council, composed of undergraduate members of the College of Education, sponsors coffee hours- each fall for fresh men to acquaint them with pro fessors. I During the pre-registration period, the council members aid new students in scheduling class es. Each spring, the council spon sors an awards banquet to honor an outstanding member of the senior class in education. An en graved cup is presented to the senior at this banquet. Members of the council are elected each spring to serve dur ing the following school year. Two freshman members are elected to the council early in the fall. The College of Education, with Its five departments—art educa tion, education, industrial educa tion, psychology and music edu cation—prepares students for work in all fields of education, psychology and school adminis tration. Besides on-campus courses in education, the college offers cor respondence and extension cours es to those not attending the Uni versity on a full-time basis, An undergraduate in the Col lege of Education must acquire a complete background in the sub ject he intends to teach, as well as a broad cultural and educa tional background in - other fields. During his junior and senior years, the education major spends at least part of one semester as an apprentice teacher in one of the state's public schools. This apprentice period includes observing, planning and teaching tinder actual classroom conditions. An All-University average of 2.3 is required before assignment to. apprentice schools. Despite the present conditions which are scorching our southern neighbor, however, Marbut feels that the threat of Communism is not imminent, for the majority of the people there are opposed to it. Leaning back in his chair and smiling, Marbut said his trip was exciting, the Argentine steaks were delicious, and that he was received with courtesy every where he went, but he thought that he would not go back next year. The weeds in his garden, he said, grew too tall in his ab sence last summer. Publicity Group to Meet The Bryan Green Publicity Committee will meet from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. today in 218 HUB. Nittany Field Day Planned by Council The first Nittany Field Day will be held Oct. 4 in the Nittany Recreational area behind the Skating Rink. This is the biggest project of the semester for the Nittany Council, which together with tutes the major bodies of rep independent men. Among other projects sponsored by the coun cils are eAnnual Christmas decoration of the residence halls. e Dances and other social func tions during the semester. • Fireside talks and gatherings in the residence halls, throughout the semester. •Maintenance of large blue book files in Nittany 20 and War ing Hall. The councils act as the legisla tive bodies for the residence halls they represent, look out for the general welfare of the students and represent them on the Asso ciation of Independent Men Board of Governors. Students are automatically vot ing members on the councils by being elected president of their dormitory units. However, any one may be on a council commit tee.
