Sutherland To Receive Ed Award The first Penn State Medal will be _awarded to 87-year-old Dr. Abby Sutherland for her out standing contribution to higher education in the commonwealth. The presentation will be made in a formal ceremony at the Ogontz Center on Saturday. The award, established by the Board of Trustees. is intended to recognize and honor the achievements of persons who have made an outstanding con tribution to higher education in Pennsylvania. Dr. Sutherland was graduated from Radcliffe in 1899, taught English and logic at Bradford Academy in Massachusetts and joined the faculty of the Ogontz School in 1902 as a teacher of English. In 1909 she became prin cipal and then purchased the school. On the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Ogontz School, in 1950, the Board of Trustees, of which Dr. Suther land was president, presented the grounds, buildings and li brary to the University for use as a center. In recognition of her educa tional endeavors, the honorary degree of pedagogy was conferred on Dr. Sutherland in 1914 by Temple University. In 1952, she earned a master of arts degree and, in 1957, a doctor of philoso phy degree, both in English, from the University of Pennsylvania.
