Thinclads Meet Jaspers
In Dual Meet Finale
The Lion cindermen will meet
the Jaspers of Manhattan College
in their final dual meet of the
season tomorrow at New York.
The Nittanies' have a 4-1 rec
ord on the dual meet circuit.
Their sole loss was to Navy in
their first dual meet of the sea
son. Since then, they have
downed West Virginia, Colgate,
Michigan and Pitt.
According to Varsity Track
Coach Chick Werner, the Lions
have been improving every day
and it is possible that the Nit
tanies may score an upset over
the powerful Jaspers.
Werner is especially pleased
with the progress of his half
milers, Ed Moran—holder of the
Penn State 880 record (1 . 50.2)-
13111 Schwab and Chick King.
"They are coming along terrifi
cally," he said, "hut they will
have to really put out to beat
Tom Murphy."
Murphy is Manhattan's half
mile flash and is rated as one
of the top middle distance men
in the East.
Murphy took the laurels in
the 600-yard run in the IC4-A
tourney last winter. He turned
in a 1:48.6 eff or t to anchor
Manhattan's victorious 2 - mile
relay team in the Collesium
Relays last week. His best time
in the open half-mile is 1:49.1
--done last year.
(lose behind Murphy is team
mate Joe Soprano. Soprano's
best time in the 880 is 1:51.0.
Soprano and Murphy are also
the Jaspers' top 440 entries. With
the aid of teammates Joe Colino
and Denny Burbridge, the Jas
pers turned in a 3:11,9 effort in
the mile-relay at the Collesium.
"We may surprise Manhat
tan in the discus," Werner said.
Werner seemed pleased with
the progress of the Nittanies'
top discus men, Andy Nyce
and Jim Wambold. Nyce and
Wambold have been constantly
