PAGE EIGHT Newspapers' Power Cited by Publisher "Newspapers have the power to control the economic and social climate of the world," according to Arthur "Red" Motley, publisher of Parade magazine. Drlotely said newspapers can make or break businesses, communities and nations. Motley spoke on "Respons Free Press" at the awards din ner of the Pennsylvania press conference Saturday night. He said, "The recession is real, and newspapers play an important part in it, but they have not been careful to trans mit all the news." He cited the case of a large paper mill in the South which was forced to close down for a week. The local newspaper played up the fact that 1200 people were going to be out of jobs, but neglected to mention that the plant had come to the town after the war, created 1200 new jobs and was currently in an expansion program. "Newspapers," said Motley, "must be careful not to create a climate of hysteria." He said newspapers are not keeping pace with the coin munities they serve and rely too much on tradition. Motley said this same problem exists in education where educators are attempting to teach stu dents the same way they did 25 years ago. He cited the Uni versity's closed-circuit televi sion system as an example of new methods being tried in ed ucation. Motley said newspapers which don't keep pace with their corn munities lack neither brains nor money, but a study of them selves. He said the day of the national newspaper is gone, "and it is a good thing. The strength of our country lies in small local news papers and their coverage of lo cal events. Small newspapers are just now beginning to meet this challenge." Motley said that "too many newspapers don't have the guts to charge what their product is Salem • menthol fresh bilities and Opportunities of a Senior Gift-- (Continued from page one) cover of the book and on the sub-dividers.
