Companies Interview
Despite Recession
The number of companies interviewing seniors this year
is not down as much as the recession seemed to indicate it
would be, according to Donald M. Cook, assistant director of
the University Placement Service. Approximately 365 com
panies from all areas held interviews on campus
In comparison with other years!
the number of recruiters for non
technical students has been higher
this semester than ever before and
there has been a particular in
crease in the number of retailing
and insurance companies, Cook
said.
Total needs, however, he said,
are down probably as much as
25 per cent from last year. Cook
noted, however, that some com
panies have been notified that
not enough students had signed
up for an interview with them.
The placement service has a
policy of notifying companies
who expect to be interviewinj
on campus when six or less stu
dents sign up for an interview.
Companies this year have been
a little more selective, Cook said.
They are placing more emphasis
on academic standing and over-all
abilities, there is more demand for
the top students, and the students
with low averages or a pending
military obligation are having
more trouble, he said.

L&M's patented filtering process electrostatically

The average salary, excluding '
education majors, is over last
year's, but percentage-wise the in
crease is lower: last year the av
erage salary was $422 and this 1
year it is expected to be between'
$430 and $435, Cook said. 1
Cook said he feels the num
ber of interviews per person
wilt be down this year. He says I
the reason for this could be ei- 1
ther that the students have
eliminated themselves, or that
they are being more selective.
Cook urged all graduating sen
liars without jobs to stop in at the
'placement service in Old Main be
cause some jobs are still available.
Many recruiters were not able to
!interview on campus and would
(like to have written applications.
"There are plenty of jobs, but
!students this year have to do more
digging," Cook said. There will be
ir.o . e students without jobs at
graduation, but if they will persist
they should be able to find jobs
by fall, he added.
