WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1958 LEE SHAKESPEk. •chant of Venice," sorrow, Friday and 't to right, they are yer's S To Resemb4 Elizabethan Set The acting area of an Elizabeth an playhouse in conteinporary style will be reproduced in the set of the Penn State Players' pro duction of the Merchant of Venice. The Shakespearean play will be presented tomorrow, Friday, Sat urday afternoon and Saturday evening in Schwab Auditorium. Cast members will be dressed in Italian Renaissance costumes. The set and some of the costumes were designed by Russell G. Whaley, instructor in theatre arts. Other costumes are-being imported from Newport and Philadelphia. -The set is built on two levels, with stairs leading from the first to the second level. Each level contains an inner and an outer stage. An apron extending in front of the stage will be used for street scenes. The purpose of the different act ing areas is to give flUid action to the scenes. Scenes can then be changed without pulling the cur tain. Three curtains will be used in the play. One, for the street scene, is painted like Italian grillwork. Another is a damask print. Musicians, playing sixteenth century music on instruments of the period, will appear in costume behind a sheer third curtain. Tickets for the play will be sold at the Hetzel Union desk and at the door. The cost is 75 cents for tomorrow evening and the matinee, and $1.25 for the Friday and Saturday performances.
