PENNSYLVANIA Mock Bombers Stage Attack For Test Raid BATTLE CREEK, Mich, (R)— Make-believe enemy bombers by the hundreds swept across the United States yesterday in a mas sive test of the nation's ability to recover from a nuclear attack. First reports flashed to Civil Defense headquarters here indi cated nearly 300 mock bcimbs dropped on widely scattered key defense and industrial points in the imaginary invasion. More than half a million Civil Defense workers went into action when the North American Air Defense Command at Colorado Springs, Colo., got word at 10:03 a.m. that enemy aircraft were speeding toward the nation's northern borders. The test, called Operation Alert 1958, will continue through Wednesday. Chiefly it's an exer cise for Civil Defense workers at national, state and local levels, but civilian populations in some areas also took part. President Eisenhower went to a secret bomb shelter at Washing ton, D.C. In actual war, the shel ter would serve as his emergency headquarters for the direction of goyernment affairs. In a speech prepared for a din ner honoring Republican members of Congress, Eisenhower appealed for action on those programs with out regard to party labels. But he also told his GOP audience that the party's pros pects for capturing control of Congress from the Democrats in the November elections are bright.
