ab Auditorium until July 1955
.vhen they were removed to the
,University salvage dump.
Speaking on "Bariiard and
his statues: Tragicomedy at
Harrisburg," at the second in
the current Simmons series
sponsored by the College of the
Liberal Arts, Dickson said the
statues now may be the only
remaining plaster models of the
two original statues. The actual
marble statues were both pur
chased by Rockefeller and are
at the Rockefeller mansion on
the Hudson.
Dickson called Barnard a dedi-'
cated, authentic genius who al
though a promoter of not always
practical ideas was always a,
sculptor.
The "tragicomedy" at Harris-1
burg started in 1901 when Bar-:
nard was awarded the contract
for the sculptoring for the Capi-, ,
tol Building then being built.
After working out an elab
orate scheme, Dickson said, Bar
nard became engaged in a tus
sle with the Commonwealth
when numerous reductions were
made in the allotments for the
work.
For 14 years Barnard worked
on the two groups of statues—
all that remained of his elaborate
plans—fought with the legisla
ture for more money and rose to
great popularity with his work.
Barnard, Dickson said, was
fortunate that he was at odds
with the legislature and the
architect of the Capitol Build
ing because when the scandal
caused by the immense ex
penditures for decoration of the
building broke, he was not in
cluded in' the ranks of those
attacked for their extravagance.
Barnard's works had carried
him to such popularity, Dickson
said, that at the dedication cere
mony for the two groupings which
stand on either side of the main
protico the Pennsylvania band
played such songs as "Barnard"
and "The Barnard March." The
song "Pennsylvania" was first
voiced in honor of Barnard, he
said.
