Liberal Aits Research
Dr. Frederick R. Matson, professor of archaeology has
been named assistant dean for research in the College of the
Liberal Arts and also director of the Social Science Research
Center
He will continue as professor of archaeology.
The position of assistant dean
for research is a new post The
Social Science Research Center
was established in 1952 to encour
age research in the social sciences,
co-ordinate the research interests
of the members of the faculty and
staff, assist in obtaining financial
support for research, and facili
tate the widest possible publica
tion; dissemiriation use and ap
plication of its discoveries and ,
conclusions. .
Dr. Matson was appointed to
the University faculty in 1948 as
professor of ceramics and in 1953
was named professor of archae
ology. Previously, he was head of
the glass section research labora
tories of the Armstrong Cork Co.,
Lancaster, for four years and was
an • assistant ceramic engineer
working on optical glass with the
National Bureau of Standards.

Dr. thatson served from 1936
to 1942 with the University of
Michigan as a field archaeologist
in Iraq, as a research assistant in
ceramic archaeology and as .as
sistant.curator of ceramics.
In 1955, Dr. Matson served as a
field associate with the Iraq-Jar
mo expedition sent into the field
