Students Blast
Ban on Editor
The actions of five New York
City college presidents in refus
ing to allow John Gates, editor of
the Daily Worker, to speak on
their campuses, have been pro
tested by members of the Stu
dents for Democratic Action.
Alex Shakow, national chair
man of the group, which is af
filiated with the Americans for
Democratic Action, said in a tele
gram to one of the presidents:
"A spoon-fed educational pro
gram denies American students
their faith in democracy and pre
pares them poorly for participa
tion in the real world of compet
ing ideas. SDA feels that totali
tarian dogmas can be defeated
openly and fairly without curtail
ment of the political liberties of
their proponents."
