Dr. Bernard cited the need to
"slough off the transmission of
information as a goal." and put
more of the burden of learning
on the student. Her statement
was supported by several panel
members who felt a student can
get lecture information by read-
ing a textbook.
Dr. Whaley maintained that
content learning is not a real edu-
cation. He said class participation
should - enable the student to eval
uate opinion and information and
organize the course material. He
said, however, it makes little dif
ference whether the recitation or
lecture method is used where
content learning is involved.
.A teacher's professional skill.
Dr. Brown said, lies in involv
ing the student in the teacher
learning process. He mentioned

change and try new things in
course matter as a fallacy.
Dr. Condee, although support
ing the importance of lectures
for some students, suggested that
a closer relationship be estab
lished between professor and stu
dent. In this way, he said, the
student is not afraid to present
views and question material.
A stimuiation• for creative
activity Was suggested by Dr.
Davidson to draw a student into
the real meaning behind the
course. He said part of the re
sponsibility for the motivation
rests on the professor.
Dr. Frederick B. Marbut, pro
fessor of journalism, as a member
of the discussion audience, fav
ored the lecture method of teach
ing. He was supported b•. several
others who felt college level stu
dents are receptive to interesting
