Shown at Library
Seventy-five prize-winning news and feature photo
graphs by noted American news photographers are...on dis
play at the Pattee Library.
These pictures comprise one of the traveling groups of
prize-winning photographs from the annual University of
Missouri news and feature photography competition.
Loan Blanks
Are Available
For Women
Application forms for student
loans and fellowships are avail
able to University women at the
dean of women's office.
The loans, which are financed
by Kappa Kappa Gamma Soror
ity, are available to women under
30 years of age who have com
pleted at least one year of Uni
versity work. Women in the jun
ior and senior classes will be
given preference.
A maximum of $4OO will be
loaned to one applicant, and it
may be used for tuition, books
and supplies, room and board and
transportation.
Five hundred dollar fellow
ships are available to women who
will receive a bachelor's degree
before July 1. Candidates must
'have a high scholastic standing,
be under the age of 30, and have
shown ability in some form of
University activity.
The appointments are for one
a academic year, and are made on
a competitive basis without re
gard to sorority affiliation.

Among the prize-winners ex
hibited are "Tornado Kansas"
by Leonard McCombe of Time
magazine; "The Walls Came
Tumbling Down," a fire picture
by Lt. Bob Kennedy of the Asso
ciated Press; "Kentucky Derby
-1955," a portrait of a woman
derby fan, also by McCombe.
Also displayed are "The Bare
ifoot Contestant,",a sports picture
lby Richard Carlson of the Law
irence, Kansas, Journal-World;
and "104 Years Young," a por
trait of an aged lady by Earl Seu
ibert, of the Minneapolis Star and
Tribune.
Churchill Series Shown
There is also a photograph of
President Dwight D. Eisenhower
instructing his grandson on how
to swing a golf club. It is en
titled "Presidential Body English"
and was taken by Stanley Tre
tick of the United Press.
A series of portraits of Winston
Churchill in the exhibit is en
titled. "A Very Gallant Gentle
man Moved Beyond Words." This
series is by Larry Burrows of
Time magazine.
One feature of the display is
the "Dust Bowl Series," a pic
torial account of the recent
drought in the Southwest, by
Dave Mathias of the Denver Post.
About 300 Chosen
The annual University of Mis
souri competition is entered into
by staff and free lance photo
graphers from all over the coun
try. About 200-300 pictures are
selected as prize-winners, the
pictures are broken into groups
of about 80, and these groups are
sent around the country for exhi
bition in various places.
The exhibition at the Univer
sity is being sponsored by the
!School of Journalism.
The display will continue until
Saturday.
Landscape Division
Photographs Roads
The Division of Landscape Con
struction and Maintenance has
completed photographing the Uni
versity's 81 road and driveway en
trances.
The photographs will be sent
to the State Department of High
ways in Harrisburg.
Walter W. Trainer, director of
landscape construction and main
tenance, said the photographs and
locations of the entrances will be
sent to Harrisburg to comply with
a State law. The law requires
private roads and driveways to
be re-registered within succeed
ing 20-year periods or become
public.
Russell Signs Contract
BOSTON, Dec. 19 (W)—Bill
Russell, 6-10 All America and
Olympic basketball player, today
signed to play with the Boston
Celtics in the National Basketball
[Association.
Russell, ef - stwhile University of
San Francisco star, was signed
for an undisclosed amount by Cel
tic owners Walter Brown and Lou
Pieri in a brief ceremony at Bos
ton Garden.

a metal form the size of a page.
Personnel are assigned to
"issue" once a week, which
means they are expected to be
in the office from 4 p.m: until
all the proofs have been read
and the paper is ready to go to
press. Of course, women staffers
must leave according to their
permissions.
The Collegian goes to press'
while most students sleep very
soundly, three or four hours after
Collegian staffers have finished,
their work. Sometime between
1
5 and 6 a.m., the big presses begin)
to roll. They do their job in 15.
minutes.
The circulation staff takes
over from here. They make sure
that Collegians are placed at
various points on campus where
sleepy students can easly pick
them up.
A junior board wire editor has
the sole responsibility of choosing
stories, writing headlines, and de
ciding where stories go on the

day-to-day policy and oversees
general operations. Much of his
time is spent with public rela
tion work and in preparing the
editorial page with the manag
ing editor.
The sports editor directs his
two pages as he sees fit.
This year The Daily Collegian
is operating in its 52nd year of
publication as a student-operated
newspaper.
In its infancy the paper was an
eight column, four page weekly.
Since then, it has grown to an
8- to 12-page tabloid published
Tuseday through Saturday.
More than anything, Collegian
personnel cherish the words of
the late President Ralph Dorn
