Observations in Europe
The University Christian Association will sponsor two
European seminars next summer.
A 41-day "Introduction to Europe" seminar from June
20 to July 31 will emphasize political, educational, and re
ligious patterns, and a 49-day "International Relations"
seminar from June 27 to Aug. 15

Dr. Edward 13. Van Ormer, pro
fessor of psychology, will serve
part-time as assistant dean of the
Graduate School, effective today.

Earns Degrees
Dr. Van Ormer was born in
Norwood. He received his BA de
gree from Juniata College and his
MA and PhD degrees, both in psy
chology. from Columbia Univer
sity.
Following his graduation from
Juniata College. he served two
years as a teacher in the public
schools of Mount Union.
Joins Faculty
He then served on the faculty
of Wooster College. Wooster. Ohio:
Juniata: Wagner College. Staten
Island, N.Y,; St. Joseph's College
for Women, Brooklyn. N.Y.; and
Hunter College, N.Y.. before he
was appointed in 1936 as assist
ant professor of psychology.
Dr. Van Ormer's research in
terests have been in the areas of
educational an d psychological
measurement, learning, child psy
chology, and instructional aids.
He is a member of various pro
fessional organizations and is a
fellow of the American Psycho
logical Association.

the British Parliament and the
West German Bundeshaus, stu
dents and professors at Cam
bridge University and the Univer
sities in East and West Berlin.

Europeans in this age of political
and spiritual upheaval; the atti- '
tude of Europeans toward Ameri
can people, culture, and foreign
policy; the economical, political.,
and ideological forces which are'

stu
dents can be more responsible par
ticipants in world affairs.
Itinerary Includes
The itinerary for the "Introduc
tion to Europe" seminar includes
four days in Cambridge; seven
days in London; six days in Paris:
four days in Bonn; seven days in
Berlin; three days in Munich;
four days in Wildhaus. Switzer
land; three days" in Kerk en
Wereld. Holland; and two days in
Amsterdam. The seminar will cost
$750 per student.
The itinerary for the. "Inter
national Relations" seminar in
cludes 12 days in England; five
days in France; 13 days in Ger
many; four days in Vienna; three
days in Zagreb, Yugoslavia; two
I days in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia;
two days in Venice; four days in
Switzerland, and two days in Am
sterdam. The cost for this seminar
will be $B7O per student.
Costs Include
The seminar costs include trans-1
continental transportation by a
special four-engine plane; accom
modations in carefully selected
second-class hotels or university
dormitories and meals in accord
ance with the customs of the re
spective countries.
Early application is encouraged.
Applicants will be notified by
March 1 regarding acceptance. A
registration fee of $25 is payable
on application. This is included in
the prices above, and will be re
turned if the application is not
accepted.

From Columbia
Herbert G. Stein, a former city
:editor of The Daily Collegian, has
been named recipient of the $750
;1956 Maxwell M. Geffen Scholar
ship by the faculty of journalism
tat Columbia University.
Stein, 28. was a 1951 graduate
' o f the University. Since that time
he has been a reporter on The
Oak Ridger in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Stein was born in Pittsburgh.
and attended the University of
Pittsburgh for two years before
receiving his B.A. degree at the
University. He served in the Ar
my, 1946-47 and was on occupa
tion duty for a year.
Maxwell M. Geffin, editor of
Omnibook Magazine and a grad
uate of Columbia's School of
Journalism. class of 1916, made a
gift of 515,000 to Columbia Uni
versity to establish the scholar
ship in the amount of .$750 an
nually, to the student "best quali
fied in periodical journalism."
This year's award marks the third
annual Geffen Scholarship.
