The first "hospital" was a frame structure cut from half of a barracks-like dormitory. It was located between the Armory and the Electrical Engi neering- Building. Today, with the completion of the nearly $1 million wings of the infirmary this semester, students have a well-equipped hospital and a staff of eight physicians, a den tist, a pharmacist, and 15 grad uate nurses to care for them First Patient The first patient, a sophomore' in chemistry, was admitted in 1907 and treated for pneumonia. After one year the "Pest House" was moved to the woods west of New Beaver field and was used as an isolation ward for students with contagious diseases, hence the• name "Pest House." It was abandoned after four years. An epidemic of scarlet fever in 1912 showed the need for an or ganized medical service. After a delay of three years because of finances a residence, known as Beecher House today, was con verted into an infirmary for stu dents requiring medical care. The first floor was used as a dispen sary and the second floor con tained eight beds. Infirmary Opened in 1929 In 1929 with money advanced by the State College Women's Club, the Potato Growers of Penn sylvania, and other friends of the institution, a 30-bed infirmary was opened with every facility except that required for major surgery. The University's growing pains caused by increased enrollment have made it necessary to con struct two additional wings. Last year out of an enrollment of more than 12,000 students 8,851 used the health service for a total of 32,231 visits. Dr. Herbert R. Glenn. director of health service, said that 60 per cent of the University's student (Continued on page twelve) Prof to Talk On Yule Art Dr. Harold Dickson, professor of fine. arts, will give several lee tuies dealing with Christmas art during December. Incorrect Address Slows Post Office If you're not receiving the mail you think you should be receiving or if it's always late, it may be your fault, the University post office says. Students living in campus resi dence halls can help prompt dcf livery of their mail, especially during the Yule rush, by advis ing correspondents of their cor rect address, the post office said. The proper address includes the name of the residence hall and the assigned mail box number as well as the name of the student and the post office. A time-consuming search could be avoided if all students would inform their correspondents of their correct address.
