PAGE TWO Quick Thinking Averts West Halls Panty Raid A false fire alarm practice almost sparked off a panty raid in the West Hall area Sunday night. But the incident amounted to only a lot of noise in the nippy air, several crude attempts to make a break for Thompson Hall and a few flash lights focused on Thompson win dows It. was avoided mainly because no one in the throng of approxi mately 700 male students wanted to risk becoming the 'leader" and because of quick-thinking on the part of a member of All-Unwer sity Cabinet and a dormitory counselor. Lasted IS Minutes The incident, which started shortly after 9 p.m., lasted about 15 minutes. Lash Howes, Association of In dependent Men president, went to the sore spot of the throng and warned the students that an inci dent such as this could ruin any chance of receiving a Christmas vacation extension. Howes said the chances for a one-day extension, as proposed by All -7.3 n i yen , - t y President Robert Bahrenburg, were "good:* Talked With Walker Howes said Bahrenburg talked to President Eric A. Walker Satur day morning and that now "the top men in the administration are on our side." This calmed the majority of the students who heard him. Some of these students asked Howes to get in a position where all the stu dents could hear him. This he did. He stood above the steps lead ing to the West Hall area and re peated his appeal for them to go inside. Yells Limited Some were convinced, some were not. The "we-want-pants" yells were limited. • Then a dormitory counselor said he would turn in the name of any one he saw on his floor. This sent most of one floor inside. The rest went along, some die hards still shouting "we want pants." Later in the evening. about 10:30, about 25 students went out side to try to get things going again. Their attempts failed.. The University has dealt severe ly with students caught partici pating in such incidents. Several students were expelled for a simi lar but larger incident in the spring of 1955.
