PAGE SIX University Among 300 NSA Member Schools The University last year joined the National Student Association, a confederation of 300 American colleges and universities representing 600,000 students. One of NSA's purposes is facilitating the exchange of ideas, operations, and programs through conferences, clinics. workshops, periodicals, special publications, and the Student Government Information Service. NSA representatives, with the aid of student government, bring appropriate ideas and plans from NSA into the school system. The NSA committee at the University is organized into four divisions—education affairs, na tional affairs, student affairs and student government affairs. Once a year voting student representatives of member col leges atend the National Student Congress where they work on specific issues such as plans, pro grams, arid policies for NSA to follow during the coming year. They also discuss national and international issues concerning education Training Sessions Included In addition to the committee work at the Congress, training sessions for student government. leaders are carried out to help representatives gain a working knowledge • of leadership pro grams. Another part of NSA is a Na tional Advisory Council, corn posed of educators and leading public figures. In addition to its national and international scope, NSA works on a regional level. There are 19 geographic regions in the na tional organization. Regional meetings are held twice a year to establish programs and policies representative of the area opinion and individual member schools. Hendel. McCabe Elected Two University students will assume regional positions this year. Barbara Hendel was elected chairman, and Lawrence McCabe was chosen vice president of in ternational affairs. McCabe has since resigned his position. Regional organizations, th e main link • between the member schools and the National Con gress. plan specific projects for the benefit of its region. As another purpose NSA states that it provides - a voice for stu dents nationally and internation ally through NSA's membership in the American Council on Edu cation, the U.S. National Commis sion for UNESCO, Worla Univer sity Service, National Scholarship Service Fund for Negro Students, and other educational and civic groups." Promotes Intercollegiate Projects NSA also includes in its pur poses the promotion of intercol legiate projects. Much of their work on Foreign Students pro grams and the NSA Travel pro gram is in line with this purpose. The -last of its purposes, as stated by NSA. is "serving the general welfare of the nation, by emphasizing throughout its pro gram student responsibility be yond the College community." Jazz C'ub Brings Top Entertainers To Nittany Valley The Jazz Club is one of the newest musical organizations on campus. This year the group plans to bring Gene Krupa. the Austral ian Jazz Quintet. and Louis Arm strong to campus. Jazz groups previously heard at the University have included Dave Brubeck and his Quartet, Stan Kenton, Charlie Mingus and Jimmy McPartland and his All Stars. The club was started less than! two years ago when Theodore: Richards, assistant professor of agricultural extension and adviser. to the Cornell Rhythm Club be-; fore he came to the University,l decided to form a jazz club. Much to Richards' surprise, over! 150 students showed up at the first meeting to hear tape record ings of a Stan Kenton concert held at Cornell University. From this start the group elect ed officers and drew up a consti-, tution. Richards was elected ad-1 viser and has remained in this, position ever since. Today the Jazz Club has, over 600 members. They donate rec-' ords to the Hetzel Union desk and, place records in juke boxes in the; HUB ballroom and Lion's den. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE. PENNSYLVANIA Drama Players, Thespians Oiler Fun, Practice ' The Penn State Players and Thespians, the two main dramatic organizations at the University, provide experience for students in theater arts and fun for those not interested in stage careers. Thespians, the musical-comedy group, each year presents one Broadway musical comedy and one original show, written by mem bers and other interested persons. Players presents a varied sell tragedies, classics and drama s. Each year three plays are given in Schwab Auditorium and four at Center Stage, an arena type theater in the Extension Confer ence Center. Will Present 'Ruddigore' The first Players production this semester will be 'Ruddigore,' a satire on 19th century melodra ma by Gilbert and Sullivan. This will be the second combined pro duction of the theater arts and the music departments. Last year they presented Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, "Mikado." Other Player presentations this year will include: "My Three An gels," by Albert Husson: "Idiots Delights," by Robert Sherwood. "Heartbreak House," by George Bernard Shaw; "Jim Dandy," by William Saroyan; and "Tea House of the August Moon," by John Pat rick. Tryouts are held before each production. Based on Points Membership in Play ers is award ed on the basis of points given for acting, crew work, and adver tising. Thespians, composed of students from many curriculums, presented "Sobth Pacific" last year. An ori ginal play, "Take Ten," based on the University's centennial, was al so presented. Membership in Thespians is also based on a point system for parti cipation in productions. Tryouts are held during the first week of each semester for both acting parts and crew work. The crews provide ex perience for students in all aspects of backstage work. Thespian officers elected last spring are Robert Martz, presi dent: Mary Tassia, vice president; Barbara Kinnier, secretary; Tru man Burch, treasurer; and Robert J. Bishop. member-at-large. GRIGGS PHARMACY Acting Chem Head Named for Year Dr. A. Witt Hutchison, profes sor of chemistry, will serve dur ing this academic year as acting head of the department of chemis try at the University. Dr. W. Conard Fernelius, pro fessor and head of the department of chemistry, has been granted a leave of absence until June 30, 1957 to study Oxford Univer sity, Oxford, England, under a Guggenheim Fellowship. Dr. Hutchison is a graduate of Dickinson College and received his master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University. He has served on the faculty since 1931. The pioneer schoolhouse of Brush Valley was erected about 1800, ap proximately two and one-half miles east of the present town of Rebers burg. It was built of logs and furnished with slab benches. The program will be adminis tered by the School of the Arts, of which Dr. Albert Christ-Janer is director. Included in the curriculum will be majors in art, music, and theatre arts. These three majors, with the major in theatre arts for merly designated as a major in dramatics, were offered prior to this time as majors in the arts and letters curriculum of the College of the Liberal Arts. The Board of Trustees, in ap proving recommendations of the Senate to establish the curriculum of "the arts," also approved the transfer of the curriculum in ap plied arts from the College of En gineering and Architecture to the School of the Arts, which is a unit of the College of the Liberal Arts.
