Lions Rebound; Capture
4 Firsts to Down Navy
The Penn State gymnastic team proved it had it in the clutch Saturday night, and rebounded
from a West Point defeat by rolling over previously undefeated Navy, 57-39.
The Lions, who started their downhill slide against Syracuse and hit the bottom at Army,
proved they had the ability to come hack from a demoralizing defeat by capturing four of six first
places--Navy winning the sidehorse and the flying rings.
The big surptise of the meet came in the side horse—one of the Lions weakest events. Navy's un
defeated captain and defendingl --
eastern titlist, Steve Arnold, broke ,
in the middle of his routine, lilac-i
mg him fifth in the event ,
Sophomore Jack Biesterfeldt, on
the other hand, was impressive on •
the horse. lie was second to Navy's
Pat Ford with A" 227 score, just!
six points shy of first.
Phil Mullen came back after a
poor performance at West Point
to win the rape climb in 3.7'
seconds.
Slips in 2nd Try
A slight slip in his second at
tempt prevented Mullen from ty
ing or bettering 3.7. The sopho
more faltered in the beginning of
the• climb but recovered quickly
enough to scale the rope in 3.9.
Junior Dick Rehm, a last min
ute replacement for Bob Boud
reau, impressed Wettstone by
placing third in the rope climb in
3.9 behind the Middies' Herb Doby
who did it in 3.8.
Weissend Improves
Junior Dion Weissend showed
signs of breaking his two-week
slump by grabbing first place
honors in the horizontal bar and
finishing second in tumbling.
Armando Vega again sparked
the Nittany attack with 12 points
on the basis of a first in the par
allel bars, second in the flying
rings, and fourth in the side horse.
His 262 total in the p-bars was the
second highest individual score of
the meet
Sidwell Ties While
Sophomore Ed Sidwell pulled
another rabbit out of the Lions'
hat when he tied Navy's defend
ing eastern champ Larry White
for third place in the flying rings
with a 236 total.
Navy's Fred lioerner won the
event with 268 points in a crowd
thrilling performance. The sum
