PAGE SIX Lions Second-half Rampage Turns Game Into Rout Penn State, lacking finesse and stalling badly in the first half, displayed a second-period scoring barrage last night at Rec Hall and toppled a game Rutgers squad, 102-78. The win evened the Lions record at 2-2. John Egli’s Lions, finding it hard to hold possession and having equal difficulty in picking rebounds off both the of fensive and defensive boards, headed for the locker room at mid-game with a slim 33-31 lead Although many of the estimated 3000 fans who turned out to wit ness the eagers in their home de but found it hard to believe, the same Penn State team which had failed to stir them minutes before, sparkled into a second half of fensive machine which twisted the brand new Rec Hall orange colored nets for 69 points. Connect for 60.8 Average The Lions’ second-period scor ing spree without the slightest margin of doubt told the story of the final score. In the 20-minute final period the Nittanies con nected on 31 of 51 shots from the floor for a red-hot 60.8 shooting percentage. The Scarlet Knights, surpasing their first-half scoring output by 16 points, completed only 19 of 44 field goal attempts in the final stanza for a devas tating 23.1 percent. Ali-in-all the Nittanies outshot the Scarlet from the floor, 44-31, but dropped behind at' the foul line. 16-14. The Lions committed 31 personal fouls while the losers toed the free-throw line on 21 oc casions, Hoffman Scores 24 No less than five Penn State players reached double figures in the scoring column, with Co-cap tain Bobby Hoffman leading the pack with 24 tallies, all coming on field goals. Norm Hall fol lowed with 18, Co-captain Earl Fields had 17, Steve Baidy con tributed 14, and Bob Ramsey had 10. The Scarlet Knights’ Ralph Bayard was in second place for the game’s individual scoring hon ors. He had 22. A strong Penn State showing under • the boards also played a major role in the Lions’ wide-mar gin victory. They grabbed 67 re bounds —Rutgers had 47. Baidy pulled in 14 caroms, Ramsey had 11, and Hall accounted for 10 Penn State rebounds. Begin to Pull Away The score was deadlocked seven times the first half and changed hands four times. After 4:45 of the second half had become his tory the Nittanies showed a nine point lead, 48-39. From there on it was just a matter of how wide the winning margin would be. Bob Henninger led the winners with nine points. The Twenty Niners defeated the Tigers, 33-20. Bob Tone/was high for the winners with nine points, while Tom Wooden scored nine points for the losers. Slalag 24 Wins After holding a 18-6 halftime lead. Stala g 24 went on to defeat Dorm 25, 41-25. Bob Usaitas with 12 points and Bill Schrufer with 11 led the winners’ attack. Harry Mann scored 15 points, 11 in the second half, to spark the Susies to a 27-18 win over Dorm 40. After taking an early 8-3 lead, the Dorm 44 cagers coasted to a 15-6 victory over the Baby Sans. McGahan Scores 13 The Knicks sparked by Bill McCahan’s 13-point output de feated the Groovology Five, 30-19. Bob Taft scored 11 points' for the losers. The Tribe, 12-10 leaders at half time. beat the Filthy Five, 28-19. Joe Greytok of the Filthy Five was the game’s high man with 13 points. The BMOCs trounced the Engi neering Colts, 44-20, as Dan Rad akovich scored 17 and Henry Spayde hit for 12 for the’ win ners. Alpha Epsilon Phi, 'lndies' Dump Rivals, 39-37,28-26 Leonides B and Alpha Epsilon Phi pulled two close games out of the fire in the coed intramural basketball, league last night when they edged their rivals, Delta Gamma and Zeta Tau Alpha, 28- 26, 39-37. Delta Gamma led up until the closing minutesof the test, but Leonides rallied to beat it, 28-26.' Bette Bingman and Carol Greenawalt were high for' the Independents' with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Despite its'loss, Delta-Gamma had the game’s high scorer in Elizabeth Morrill who dunked' 15 points. After leading 24-22 at halftime, and lagging 33-21 at the end of the third quarter, Alpha Epsilon Phi moved in on Zeta Tau Alpha to- overtake it 39-37. Clare Stein carried the load for the winners, and for the night. when she exploded with 13 field goals and four fouls for 30 points. Eleanor Melvin and Marlene Marks shared scoring honors for the Zetas, each banging in 14 counters. Delta Zeta took the worst beat ing Of the night when it. was dumped by Thompson I by a 42-12 score. Delta Tau Delta lost its- chance to claim the undisputed first half championship by being held to a 2-2 tie by the Delta Sig keglers. Conrad Lentz led the Delta Sig’s attack by capturing the individual high for three games with a 543 total ' Phi Gamma Delta whitewashed Alpha Epsilon Pi, 4-0; Sigma Phi Epsiion defeated Tau Phi Delta, 3-1; and Alpha Zeta won a 4-0 forfeit victory over Phi Sigma Delta in the other IM matches.
