PAGE SIX Lions Will Host Rutgers Tonight Recreation Hall, nothing more than a practice area for Penn State’s basketball team since its season opened nearly two weeks ago, tonight will be the site of the Lions' first 1955-56 home engagement when they meet winless Rutgers. Game time is 8 p.m. The renewal of a long-time Penn State Rec Hall winning streak, shattered in the Nit tanies finale last year against Pennsylvania, will be one of the main objects for John Egli’s Lion five tonight. Penn topped the Nittanies, 85-79, in the Lions final regular season game last year and snapped an unbeaten campaign •which covered 44 Rec Hall games and had its birth in 1951 The Lions, 1-2 for the season, will be in the favorite’s role to night, on the most part due to a lack of Scarlet Knight team strength and experience. Coach Don White’s visiting quintet has failed to come up with a win in two starts this season, and is ex pected to show little improve ment on last year’s 2-22 record. Rutgers Averages 6-2 However, this year’s Rutgers squad averages a shade over 6-2, more than an inch better than in 1954-55. And if a starting team composed of mostly juniors and sophomores has picked up any experience in its two starts this year, the Nittanies may have a battle on their hands. For the second time this year, Egli plans to alter the starting team which took the floor in the Penn State opener against North Carolina State. Marisa Replaces Hall Egli announced last night that Rudy Marisa, 6-4 junior and one of four letter winners back from last year, will probably replace Norm Hall at one of the guard positions. In three games, Hall, a 6-5 junior, has averaged six points per game. Sophomore Steve Baidy, a sub stitute in the Lions’ first two games, will start at the other for ward post. He made his first var sity start in the Lions’ third game against DePaul, and emerged as the Nittanies’ high scorer for the night with 16 points. He also led the Lions against Dickinson with 19 tallies. Ramsey at Post Co-Captains Bobby Hoffman and Earl Fields will fill in the guard posts, and Bob Ramsey will get the nod at the pivot slot. The trio has averaged 13.3, 11.7, and 8.7 points respectively. In two games last year, the Nit tanies defeated the Scarlet Knights 106-69 and 83-64. In the all-time basketball series between the two schools, which had its origin in 1922, the Lions’ lead in games won, 9-5. Penn State has a 5-2 Rec Hall record over the Scarlet Gamma Phi Leads Women's Scoring In IM Basketball Gamma Phi Beta trampled Al pha Kappa Alpha 43-14 for the widest scoring margin in last night’s women’s intramural bas ketball league. Gamma Phi’s three forwards hit the double scoring column when Katie Queensbuerry scored 17, Faith Rajahn dunked 16, and Mary Lou Rank flipped in 11. Grace Smith led the losing Al pha Kappa Alpha’s with eight markers. Alpha Chi Omega stopped Kap pa Kappa Gamma 31-20 when the scoring combo of Dot Kellett and Margie Duld netted 29 points. Carolyn Briggs and Katy Sauer each scored eight counters for the losing KKG’s. Alpha Omicron Pi doubled Pi Beta Phi 22-11 with Arlene Zim merman leading AOPi’s scorers with 14 points. Jean Hartley was high scorer for the Pi Phi’s with six counters. Carole Hite and Mary Hudco vich flipped 15 and 14 points, re spectively, to lead Sigma Sigma Sigma to a 38-22 win over Chi Omega. Chi O’s Nan Wenner was high with 11. New Soccer Captain Two-year veteran Steve Flam poris is the newly-elected captain of Penn State’s 1956 soccer team. Coach Ken Hosterman names the Reading youth as one of the main sources of his team’s defensive strength during its record-making 18-game win streak. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. STATE COLLEGE. PENNSYLVANIA . . . FOR THE CAGERS REC HALL DEBUT Penn State athletic fans get their first glimpse of a varsity winter sport when the Lion basketball team faces off against Rutgers at 8 tonight at Rec Hall. For the freshmen, at least for many of them, it will be their first eye-witness view of college basketball. For the sophomores and upperclassmen, things just won't be the same. On several occasions, during the past two seasons these "old time" Lion cage fans have had opportunities to see collegiate basketball at its best and, in other instances, they've been sorely disappointed. But this year they’ll be witnessing a coach in his second year at the helm of a college team and a squad which sadly lacks experi ence, depth, and in some cases, ability. Egli stepped into the head position last Winter and had quite a load to carry. Although Jesse Arnelle and Ronnie Weidenhammer were with him, bench strength was sparse. His first-year team Wasn’t as successful as Elmer Gross’ validictory squad the year before, which won third place in the NCAA tourney after winning four and losing one. It won 17 while losing eight during the regular sea son. The Lions then went on to win one and drop two in the NCAA regionals. So, even though on a smaller scale, Penn State fens are expecting great things from this year's cage crop. But more likely than not, they are going to be disappointed. "Rig Jess" is gone and so are the teammates who surrounded him for four years. At the present Egli is faced With a major rebuilding program. His 13-man roster lists only four lettermen and only two of the four could be considered starters last year. This v pair, Co-Captains Bobby Hoffman and Earl Fields, has done well in the Lions’ three games this year considering the opposition. For instance, against North Carolina State, currently ranked third nationally, the' two scored 12 and 11 points in that order. The Wolfpack beat the Lions, 78-42, but the co-captains were largely responsible for holding the Pack to its winning total—lo.B points'below its 1954-55 average. At center, a position all-important in any basketball operation, Egli has one available candidate—6-7 Bob Ramsey.- an inexperi enced, but hard working junior. Ramsey is improving steadily, and with time, should relieve. Egli of a big headache. At the forwards Egli has been juggled with four men —Steve Baidy, Rudy Marisa, Joe Hartnett, and Norm Hall.. Baidy is a sophomore who has showed up well, but still needs polishing, and Marisa, although a letterman, can’t really be considered a veteran. Joe Hartnett and Norm Hall'are both close ' “number six” players, and once again with experience should come along. On the bench Egli has been able to turn only to Ron Rainey for re- Penn State’s soccer record since 1811, probably the best in inter collegiate ranks, shows 210-wins, 35 defeats and 41 ties. C. V. Again, many Lion cage fans may lie disappointed tonight, but the crowds always are when a team is enduring a rebuilding process. From, this comer there's no doubt that the Lions are going to finish in the black, and when ole' man experience shows up, Pehn State, we think, will again be a threat to the nation's finest. For the present, lets cheer for a win and give out with support—it'll be appreciated.
