They arrived in the United
States on Oct. .4 and the Univer
sity will be the fourth school they
will visit. They have visited the
University of Pennsylvania,
Princeton University, and Colum
bia University.

Heschel Will Present Fifth
Centennial Lecture on Religion
• Rabbi Abraham J. Heschel, internationally-known scholar, will,
present the fifth in a series of Centennial lectures on religion at
. .
8 p.m. Monday in 121 Sparks. .
His topic will be. "Faith in the Realness of God."
Rabbi Heschel, associate professor of Jewish mysticism and
philosophy, Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, New York,
N.Y., is widely known as a schol
ar, author and lecturer.
Born in Warsaw in 1907, he re
ceived , his early training in Jew-'
ish' education. At the age of 20,
he left Warsaw to attend the Uni
versity of Berlin, where he was
awarded the doctor of philosophy
degree five years later.
In 1927, Dr. Heschel published
in German his first major works,
"Maimonides'," and "Die Prophe
tie "
From 1932-33, he served as in
structor.-in Talmud at a large
Jewith school in Berlin. Four
years later he became the. suc
cessor to the Jewish mystic, Mar
tin Buber, in the Frankfort Lehr-

then went to London where he
established the Institute for Jew
ish Learning, a center for promi
nent Jewish scholars.

States in 1940, where he served
for five years as associate profes
sor of philosophy and rabbinics
at Hebrew Union College in Cin
cinnati, 0. In 1945 he joined the
faculty of the Jewish Seminary
of America, his present position
today.
His latest • book, "Man's Quest
for God," was,published in 1954.
He was also a recipient of a Gug - -
genheim award for 1954-55.
