Netmen Swamped by Navy, 9-0
Absorb 3rd
Successive
Net Defeat
By JOHN LAWRENCE
The United States Naval
Academy tagged Penn State
with their third tennis loss in
a row yesterday, 9-0, as the
powerful Middies captured all
nine matches on their home
courts at Annapolis, Mary
land.
Sherm Fogg's netmen failed
to even come close to the mid
shipmen who took all nine match
es in straight sets. Due to the in
clement State College weather
which hampered practice sessions,
Fogg had predicted that the
squad would not "shape up" un
til after the fourth match, but
the Navy whitewash was entirely
unexpected. The Lions also drop
ped encounters to Pennsylvania.
8-1. and the University of Mary
land, 6-2.
Christiansen Halted
Chuck Christiansen's string of
two straight wins came to an
abrupt and rude halt, as the
Lions' fifth man was clubbed by
Navy's Al Lewis, 6-2, 6-1. Lion
captain, Bill Zeigler, playing in
the number one slot, dropped his
third straight to Art Lynch, 6-0,
6-2. In the Lions' three games
thus far, Zeigler has failed to
d.monstrate the pre-season form
which rated him the number one
position.
Ed Seiling also lost in two sets
to the Middies' George Baldauf,
6-0, 6-2. Third man, Dean Mul
len, fared no better as he was
walloped, 6-0, 6-1 by Navy's Bill
Goggins.
Adler, Humphries Lose
Larry Adler, who was replaced
in the Maryland contest by Doug
Zuker, was installed in the fifth
slot by Fogg and the Lion junior
received the same treatment as
the other Penn State netmen, 6-3,
6-0 by Fred Hanzey. Joe Humph
ries, receiving his first singles
start of the season, was bombard
ed by Navy's Bob Clark, 6-1, 6-0,
playing out of the sixth position.
It was the same story in doubles
competition thr e e matches,
three sets in each—three Navy
victories. Middies Sam Jacobson
and Wallace Skene combined to
defeat the Lions' Dean Mullen
and Bill Zeigler, 6-4, 6-0. Gary
Ashwalt and Earl Maganane de
feated State's Chuck Christian
sen and Ed Seiling, 6-4 and 8-6.
Doug Zuker and John Clary drop
ped the final match for the Lions
when they were walloped by
Navy's Paul Howe and Ed Jessup,
6-2 and 6-1.

Lions Guided by Top-N otch Coaching
By FitAN FANUCCI
Good Coaching is a dominant
factor in producing a sports win
ner and whether it has been on
the gridiron, baseball diamond, or
golf greens Penn State has al
ways had its share of top-flight
coaching.
The king of sports, football, had
its share of famous men, starting
with its first full time coach,
Bill Hollenback, right up to the
present coach, Rip Engle.
The sport was founded in 1887
but didn't have a coach until 1910
when Hollenback took over. The
team was run by trainers in the
days preceding 1910. Hollenback
turned in a commendable 17-13-2
record in his four years as head
coach. In 1912 his team racked up
its first undefeated season and set
a national record which still
stands today, scoring 285 points
while it held the opposition to
six. It was the best team the
Lions had until 1947.
Beadek Head Coach
Hugo Bezdek became head
coach in 1918 and in his 11 years
compiled a 65-30-11 record to rate
with Penn State's all time coaches.
In this 11-year span Bezdek's
teams produced the longest un
defeated string in Penn State's
history, rolling up 32 wins with
out a defeat. The skein was l halt
ed in 1922 as Navy beat them,
14-0.
In 1930 Bob Higgins took over
the reins and in his stint of 18
years he showed a 91-57-9 record.
In 1950, Rip Engle, fresh from
his coaching position at Brown
University, became head coach
and has turned in a 30-14-2 rec
ord with his best year coming in
1954.
In 1875, baseball came to the
Penn State campus, And In 1907

it acquired its first full time
coach. The famous coaches started
with the same Hugo Bezdek of
football fame. He managed the
team from 1920-1924 and from
1926-1930.
In 1930 the present coach, Joe
Bedenk, became coach and in his
stretch at the helm, his record
shows 269-119-2. Bedenk's great
years were in 1949 and 1952. In
'49 his team won 19 and lost five
and were runnerup in the Dis
trict Two finals for representa
tion in
_the College world series,
Lions in Wald Series
In 1952 a 17-6 record was com
piled and in the district finals the
Lions came out on top. As repre
sentatives in the College World
Series, Penn State wound up with
a 2-2 card.
Dutch Hermann ' was the first
basketball coach in Lion history
and in his venture of 15 years he
grossed 157 wins and 71 losses.
The best team in Penn State's
history, percentage-wise, was in
1923 when the season ended 13-1,
the only loss coming at the hands
of Cornell, 27-25.
John Lawther was another fa-
mous cage coach at the Univer
sity. He took over the duties in
193? and did not relinquish his
post until 1949. During those years
his teams wan 149 and lost 92.
His best season was in 1942,
when his team accepted an invita
tion to the NCAA tournament
and ended up with a 1-1 record.
A significant account of this team
was that Elmer Gross and John
Egli played on it, and in future
years both of them were to take
over the head coaching job.
Gross compiled an 80-40 record
in his four years as coach. -And in
1954 his team ended up, third in
the NCCA playoffs, winning three
and losing only one:
Penn State's most famous track
and cross-country coaches were
Nate Cartmell and Chick Werner.
