'Rainbow' Leads Are
Missourian, Virginian
An Air Force lieutenant that sings and a southern girl with a
newly acquired Irish accent—they're not really leprechaun's magic,
but the romantic leads in "Finian's Rainbow" which opens at 7:30
Thursday night for a weekend run in Schwab Auditorium.
The singing lieutenant is 24-year-old special student in meteor
ology Michael McKay, and the
"Irish" southerner is Jeanne Lip
py, eighth semester arts and let
ters major, from Arlington, Va.
McKay and Miss Lippy are mak
ing their second Thespians ap
pearance
McKay may, be a relative new
comer to musical comedy on
campus but has appeared with
the Light Opera Guild, and also
did stock work with the Munici
pal Opera of his home town—St.
Louis, Mo.
"I liked stock work a lot," Mc-
Kay said, He also appeared in
road companies of "Brigadoon"
and "High Button Shoes." Last
semester McKay sang "I Remem
ber Carol" in Thespians' original
"Funny Side Up."
McKay is a graduate of the Uni
versity of Maryland and also at
tended Saint Louis University,
where he was a member of the
basketball team.
The government is sending Mc-
Kay to the University to learn
meterology. Along with Thespians
and Air Force work, McKay made
a straight 3 average last semester.
"I may give singing a whirl or
I may stay in the Air Force," Mc-
Kay added. "Right now this is
almost a perfect combination."
Miss Lippy said she hoped the
public would notice her slightly
red hair. "I've put six capsules on
it, and just one is normal. I'm
afraid it'll never get red."
She transferred last semester
from Mary Washington College
last year because "I was tired of
a girl's school and I wanted to
major in dramatics." Her singing
voice first got attention when she
won first prize in the Junior Class
talent show. She also won third
prize in the state talent contest.
Miss Lippy made her Thespians'
debut as Evalina in "Bloomer
Girl" last spring and kept her
self busy during the summer ap
pearing with the Bull Run Sum
mer Theater. She played Corliss
Archer in "Kiss and Tell," Gladys
in "The Skin of Our Teeth," a
Brooklynese chorus girl in "Girl
Crazy," Marian in "The Heiress,"
and Aunt Trina in "I Remember
Mama."
"I don't think ru go directly
into dramatics when I graduate
in June," Miss Lippy said. "I'd
like to do some recreational di
recting, if possible."
