Technology
Course in
Metal Begun
A two-year program in metal
technology has been organized at
the University to help meet the
need for men in the metallurgical
and allied industries.
Graduates of the curriculum
will receive associate degrees in
metal technology and will be pre
pared to assist metallurgists and
metallurgical engineers or to re
place them in tasks of a routine
nature that do not require a man
with four years of college train
ing.
Special laboratories and equip
ment will be installed at Ogontz
Center and if demand warrants
expansion of the program, it is
expected that facilities will be
made available at additional Uni
versity centers.
Ogontz was selected because
special laboratories could be made
available there and because of its
location near Philadelphia, the
center of the fabricating metals
industry in Pennsylvania.
Between 25 and 30 men will be
admitte to the first class but if
the demand warrants it, two class
es, each with 25 or 30 men, will
be offered at Ogontz.
The program will be admin
istered through the General Ex
tension Services of the University,
directed by Edward L. Keller.
Much of the detailed planning
was done by Donald C. Jones,
director and professor of Mineral
Industries Extension Services, and
Louis F. Haller, associate profes
sor in charge of mineral tech
nology extension.
The first women's social group,
and• the forerunner of today's
sororities ! was the Nita-Nee club
founded in 1922 and named after
an Indian princess of this area.

Building Sale
On at Rochester
The University of Rochester is
selling 13 buildings.
Buildings on the campus of the
women's college are being offered
for sale because the university is
combining the women's college
witl the men's college in another
part of Rochester.
The oldest building offered for
sale is Anderson Hall, the original
classroom building erected in 1861.
Other old buildings include Sib
ley Hall, library built in 1874; and
Reynolds Chemistry Laboratory,
built in 1887.
The university will turn over
Munro Hall, a dormitory and
Cutler Union, a modern building,
to the Eastman School of Music,
which is next to the women's
campus.
German Classes
By Short Wave
Short wave news broadcasts in
German will be used as part of
the course of study in the lan
guge for the spring semester, Dr.
Philip A. Shelley, head of the de
partment of German, ha s an
nounced.
Dr. Shelley also said that sev
eral films in German will be used.
"These broadcasts," said Dr.
Dagobert de Levie, assistant pro
fessor of German, who has experi
mented with the use of short wave
radio in teaching, "give the stu
dent a chance to hear German
spoken by natives at normal speed
as contrasted to German spoken
specially for students in the class
room.
"They also are concerned with
the news of the day, a subject that
is familiar to the student."
The student will not be expected
to understand the broadcasts, Dr.
de Levie said, but if he learns
two or three words each time he
hears the broadcast, he soon will
gain the ability to understand
much of the conversation.
