Parcell, an artist of Washington, Pa., has been presented to the University by an anonymous Pittsburgh industrialist. Andrew W. Case,' pro fessor of fine arts and chairman of the division of fine and applied arts, examines the canvas, a Centennial year gift. The painting has been added to the University art collection. ,University Gets Painting A Centennial gift of a large oil painting, titled, "The Log Splitter," has beeh presented to the University by an anonymous Pittsburgh industrialist. The canvas is the work of Malcolm S. Parcell, of Washington, Pa., an artist who is widely known fore his oil paintings. The gift, which was sent to Andrew W. Case, professor of fine arts and chairman of the division of fine and applied arts, will be added to the University's growing, art collection. Another painting in the University's art collection done by Parcell is the portrait of Judge James Milholland, president of the Board of Trustees. This portrait was presented to the University in 1950 to honor Judge Milholland upon completion of 25 years of service to the University. Born in Claysville, Parcell was graduated from Carnegie Insti tute of Technology and since 1942 has been director of art at Wash ington and Jefferson College. In 1918, Parcell was awarded first prize of the Associated Ar tists for his painting, "Trinity Hall." The following year his canvas, "Louine," won the Saltus gold medal of the National Academy of Design. In 1924, he won the Logan Medal of the Art Institute of ,Chicago for "Jim McKee" and the Harris prize for "Portrait of My ?Mother." Twice winner of the popularity prize at the Carnegie Inter national in Pittsburgh, Parcell has had copies of his paintings ap pear in many of the leading professional magazines. His works have been exhibited in many of the galleries of the country. Pitt Symphony The Pittsburgh Symphony Or chestra, conducted by William Steinberg, last night presented the third of the Community Con cert Series in Schwab Auditorium. Included in the program were "Toccata" by Walter Piston; "Variations on an Original Theme (`Engima'), Opus 36" by Edward Elgar; and "Symphony No. 4 in 4minor, Opus 98" by Brahms.
