DU, Phi Kappa Sig
Fight for IM Title
MoVing into the opening round of semi-final action last night,
the intramural boxing _ championship has boiled down to a death
struggle between last year's champion Phi Kappa Sigma and cur
rent secopd-running Delta Upsilon. Things are so tight, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon is also conceded an outside chance for the mitt title.
The outcome will remain in doubt until the conclusion of Thurs
day night's final action. However, since 15 points are awarded to a
champion, and .if both Phi Kappa Sigma and Delta Upsilon meet
with disaster, Sigma 'Alpha Epsilon could slip into the coveted
position providing both their en
trants hung up titles Thursday
evening.
• Lang Wins ,
In last night's action. of eight
bouts; Pete Lang of Beta Theta Pi
walked off with, a split decision
over his unlimited opponent, Walt
Mazur, Phi Kappa Tau. For the
lanky Beta, it was the old story
of science over strength: Fighting
through the first two rounds with
a left jab and an occasional right
cross,. Lang efectively tied up the
bull-like Mazur. Then in the final
round he took the offensive with
both hands landing to the head
of the , tired Mazur. It was this
third round splurge that wrapped
up the fight for. Lang. Lang will
meet Russ Mandeville, Sigma Al
pha Epsilon, for the unlimited ti
tle.
The-155-pound bout of the even
ing was stopped in the final round
when Iry Abramson, Alpha Epsi
lon Pi, scored with a two-fisted
attack to the head of Jack Sadler
of Alpha Tau Omega. Referee Ed
die Sulkowski stopped the fight
after Sadler had absorbed ter
rific punishment from the con
tinual two-handed barrage of
Abranmn, who never stopped
throwing from the opening bell.
Tiri4,assi Beats Hickey
Guy •Tirabassi spent the first
two rounds chasing his 155-pound
opponent Charley Hickey from
Del t a Upsilon; however, he
caught and dropped the DU in
the third round with a left hook
to the head. Tirabazzi's straight
left jab paved the way for the
knockdoi when he followed it
with a right cross and the hard
left hook.
In the unlimited division, Russ
Mandeville, Sigma Alpha Epsilon,
gained ; the three round decision
•over Jim Burkhart, Kappa Sigma.
Mandeville utilized a straight left
'jab; and built up a lead through
out the first two rounds, which
offset the third frame. splurge by
Burkhart.
Ray Okamoto lifted Phi Kappa
Sigma's hoPes when he outpointed
Howie Guenther of Sigma Chi.
Okamoto finished strong and con
tinually landed a sweeping left
hook to Guenther's head.
Marlin Reaches Finals
In a 155-pound attraction, Dick
Martin entered the finals of the
independent division when he
gained -the nod over Torn Long.
Martin scored with a right hand

LUCKY DR*ODLES ?OODLES °
IT'S A FACT! College smokers prefer Luckies to all other
brands—and by a wide margin—according to the latest,
greatest coast-to-coast college survey. The No. 1 reason:
Luckies taste better. They taste better, first of all, because
Lucky Strike means fine tobacco. Then, that tobacco is
toasted .. to taste better. "It's Toasted"—the famous Lucky
Strike process—tones up Luckies' light, good-tasting tobacco
to make it taste even better. Now for the Droodle above,
titled: Inept smoke ring blown by ept smoker. He'S ept, of
course, because he smokes Luckies. Be ept yourself and enjoy
the better-tasting cigarette . . . Lucky Strike.
