Winners Score 47 Foul Points;
Arnelle's 20 Tops Lion Scorers
Penn State, battling a mountainous height disadvantage,
outshot powerful North Carolina State from the floor last
night, but couldn't make up the foul shot difference and lost
to the top-ranked Wolfpack 99-77 before 12,000 at Reynolds
Collesium in Raleigh, N.C.
The Lions connected on 28 field goals, two more than
coach Everett Case's quintet, but watched the Wolfpack pile
on a cushioned lead from the foul line where they scored an
unbelievable 47 points on 59 attempts. The Lions went to the
charity line 29 times, connecting on 21.
Both figures constitute new records for the North Caro
lina club, which swept to its
fourth consecutive win in the
young cage season? The loss' was
the first for Penn State against
one win
Top Score
The Wolfpack's 99 points was
the most ever scored against a
Penn State team. The only other
team to score more than 90 against
the Lions was Western Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers beat the Nittanies
91-78 in the Oklahoma City Tour
nament in 1953.
Led by all-American center Ron
Shavlik, the Pack jumped ahead
early in the first half and led 4-0
when Bob Ramsey scored a field
goal for the Lions. Penn State
moved into a 5-5 tie and then
Shavlik dropped a pair of foul
points that gave North Carolina
a lead that was never lost.
Widen Gap
For the rest of the game the
Lions battled from behind and
watched the Wolfpack slowly pull
away on the strength of their re
lentless trips to the free throw
line.
Shavlik, who had 19 foul points
alone, led all scorers with 35
points.
The Lions' Jesse Arnelle, slowly
finding his scoring form, topped
the Lions with 20. Bob Hoffman
had 17 and Earl Fields had 16.
Matching foul points with field
goals, the Wolfpack moved stead
ily ahead in the first half and
midway through the period, led
31-17.
Lions Move Up
Then Arnelle, Fields, and Hoff
man began to find the range and
coach John Egli's team closed the
gap and they trailed 53-37 at half
time. But they could not win the
battle at the foul line. The Pack
added four quick charity points

half and then began to move into
command. At one point they led
by 28 points.
Using a pressing defense and
a fast breaking offensive, the
Lions kept a step ahead of the
Pack on the floor. They con
nected on 28 of 91 field goal at
tempts while North Carolina hit
on 26 of 80 shots taken from the
floor.
That gave them a four point
:dge in that department. How
ever, the Wolfpack, defending
champions of 'the Atlantic Coast
Conference, had a 26 point ad
vantage from the foul line.
The Lions arrived. back in State
College, today and will work out
tonight in preparation for their
second home game of the season
tomorrow at Rec Hall. They meet
Carnegie Tech in the first of four
home contests scheduled this
week.
