THEIR FINEST HOUR
Rip Engle has collected four big wins against
Pitt in his five year tenure at Penn State but
probably none was so pleasing as Saturday's 13-0
victory.
"This is a helluva great football team." Engle
said after his Lions had scored their third straight
shutout against the Panthers. "By far the greatest
I've , ever coached, and I think it's the best in the
east.
' "They played their best game of the year today
and Pitt was easily the best team we faced all
season."
The smiling Lions coach, who watched 13 seniors
play their last game for him at Pitt Stadium,
claimed all season that the 1954 team was his
best, and has already expressed fears that the
Lions might not be as strong next year.
But, that's for another day. Right now the Grey
Eagle is a happy man. New worries will come next
spring, or before, but until that time there's still
seven fat victories to look back on—and of course,
Iwo losses.
Those two frustrating weeks in the middle of
the campaign when the Lions lost to West Vir
ginia and Texas Christian are the only black
marks on the Lion record—tops since 1949 when
Bob Higgins' team lost only one.
One of those losses was partially cancelled out
Saturday. The Lion win deadlocked the Penn
State-West Virginia-Pitt round-robin. The Moun
taineers beat the Lions, lost to Pitt, and then the
Panthers, in turn, bowed to Penn State.

quick fold in the late stages of the.
Southwest Conference race hasn't
helped Penn State chances. Victor Dick McDowell
over Southern California, and near winner against
Oklahoma early in the season, the Frogs have
been frequent losers since Penn State gave them a
gift win five weeks ago.
That won't speak well for the Lions despite the
fact that Abe Martin's outfit got every break in the
book against the Pennsylvanians, while the Lions
played the worst game of the season.
A QUICK GLIMPSE
As far as I'm concerned Jesse Arnelle had a
better season this year than two years ago when
he led all pass receivers and was making the
headlines. This just wasn't an end's year this time.
Arnelle converted to a rugged blocker and in
vulnerable defenseman behind an accentuated run
ning game. Was a steady competitor all season . . .
Dan Balthaser's performance Saturday was best
of the season for him. He was a take-charge guy
when chips were down . . . Arnelle's candid com
ment on Lenny Moore: "I never saw Grange or
any of those guys play, but this Lenny won't take
a back seat to any of them." .

them at a 10-5 pace in Saturday's
ninth and final outnig.
However, the champion sooth
sayer had to be comfortable with
a ride in the back seat in Satur
day's action, as assistant scribe
Herm Weiskopf steered himself to
a 11-4 performance for the day's
top honors.
Williams' crystal ball antics
came to a total of 93 correct picks
and 42 wrong choices to bring his
season total to a .689 average.
Williams led the quartet of pre
dictors for eight straight weeks.
Weiskopf clicked on 84 selec
tions, while going astray on 51
decisions to account for a .622
percentage—good for second hon
ors.
